Where is Ted Cruz?

For his own sake and the country's, the conservative stalwart should stand behind Trump

Aside from saying on Monday that he isn’t bothered one way or the other about being given a speaking slot at the GOP convention, Ted Cruz has been noticeably absent from the public eye since exiting the 2016 contest. One would think that a committed constitutionalist like Cruz would be doing everything he can to prevent Hillary Clinton from becoming president. But even if Cruz isn’t willing to stand side-by-side with Trump to that end, he should at least be willing to do so for his own self-interest.

The fact is that while Cruz may worry that associating with Trump could damage his doctrinaire conservative brand in the eyes of ideological die-hards and those evangelicals hitherto resistant to Trump’s apparent charms, the alternative should Clinton win — being cast as one of those who stood by and did nothing as Clinton waltzed into the White House — could be much worse.

If Cruz’s authentic conservative brand is hurt by association with Trump, it will be hurt just as much — if not more — by association with the Jonah Goldbergs and the Bill Kristols of the world.

There’s also the basic fact of human nature that no one likes a sore loser, and being seen as one can be a significant handicap in the political world. Hillary Clinton’s belated though relatively graceful acquiescence to Obama’s nomination in 2008 likely secured her position as secretary of state, while Richard Nixon’s embittered exit from the 1962 California gubernatorial election almost cost him his entire political career.

Blaming biased media coverage in large part for his loss to Democratic Gov. Pat Brown, Nixon lashed out at reporters. “You don’t have Nixon to kick around any more, because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference,” he said.

Indeed, were it not for an outrageously biased anti-Nixon documentary which aired on ABC the week after the election — so biased in fact that it managed to garner Nixon national sympathy — his political career would likely have been over.

But Nixon is that rare exception that proves the political rule, and if enough of the conservative base considers even for a moment that Cruz’s refusal to stand publicly with Trump against Clinton was motivated by ill feeling toward Trump, he may lose a significant amount of credibility.

PoliZette The Case for a Cruz-Trump Coalition The ugly battle between the populist front-runners provides Rubio an opening to win it all Cruz could also be of great help to Trump's electoral efforts. If Trump loses, it will likely be largely the result of a concerted and biased media campaign, as was the case for Mitt Romney in 2012. But as he proved during the GOP primaries, Cruz is one of the most effective critics of media bias, far more so than Trump, who often appears personal and petty.

Moreover, forming a new relationship with Trump could also be strategically advantageous for Cruz. That Cruz is massively unpopular among his fellow senators on both sides of the aisle is a well known fact. "I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a bitch in my life," former GOP Speaker of the House John Boehner said.

Lindsey Graham famously noted that if "you killed Ted Cruz on the floor of the Senate, and the trial was in the Senate, nobody would convict you." Indeed, to call Cruz unpopular may be an understatement. If Trump should win in November, a repaired, working relationship with the business mogul would offer Cruz a level of clout in the Senate — which for him is otherwise unattainable.

Regardless of any desire Cruz may have to run again in 2020, he should get involved in the 2016 contest now. The potential benefits — both for himself and the country — seem to far outweigh the potential disadvantages.

I thought the Donald had this election all wrapped up.

besides considering how Trump treated and called Cruz names why would Cruz "stand by him"

in fact it might make Cruz look hypocritical..

as for the comments from Boehnor and Graham .. they boosted Cruz's poll numbers..

the reason Donald has so few friends among the conservatives. is because Donald called them names and continually (without basis) insulted them..

It may be much better to keep a low profile then to be at Trumps side when Trump implodes..

I'll bet Cruz wishes he'd never attacked Trump's "New York Values" in that debate. It probably lost him the nomination.

Go back and take a look at it. Talk about imploding.

:agree: Plus the fact the article ASSUMES Cruz is a sore loser. I don't think he is anything of the kind. I think he's smart.
After all, he is a Conservative with a capital 'C'. :D And comparing him to Nixon is a stretch...

I knew the 'New York Values' thing would come back and bite him, even if he meant it differently than it was taken.

He's still my pick of them all.

If Drumpf was so damned confident he could beat the Butcher of Benghazi, why did he go through the charade of being a Republican? He should've taken her out in the democrat primaries.

I love the emails being sent out that are begging for $ for Drumpf, the "self funding" candidate. He told me earlier that he didn't need people like me, so I'm holding him to his word.

The fix is in. There are only a few ways the B of B doesn't become the next POTUS. Being indicted won't deter her. She either has to die, or Cruz leaves Cleveland as the Republican nominee.

Remember, Cruz predicted that if Drumpf is the GOP nominee, B of B wins by DOUBLE DIGITS. You've been told. Govern yourselves accordingly.

BTW...how is ANYTHING Boehner says relevant? He'd sell out his own mother for a shot glass half full of Old Smuggler.

Cruz is definitely a sore loser. I'd bet he'd have a hard time winning a dogcatcher election without Goldman-Sachs in the picture.

He sure put the screws to Carson with his lying......................................At one point Carson was ahead of every other Republican candidate. Cruz got exactly what he deserves........................OUT!

Why are you holding on to the Goldman-Sachs thing? There is nothing there.

You believe everything you hear BAD about Cruz and yet you believe everything GOOD about Trump. No one is all black or
all white. Cruz can't even keep silent without being picked on.

You know, Cruz handled Trumps insults pretty well, UNTIL Trump insulted his wife. I admire Cruz for standing up to him at that
point. That is what a real MAN does.

For your information, I don't agree with a lot of things Trump says. But he's the nominee and I'll hold my nose to vote for him.

But I absolutely ABHOR Ted Cruz............... I believe nothing that comes out of his mouth because he'll say anything to get elected.

He's both a lawyer and a typical politician. They're both below used car salesmen.

that was my thought as well... Trump should count his blessings that all those he insulted and belittled are not working thier asses off to get revenge.. (like he would have done.)

Over 12 million registered libs voted in the primaries for another former registered lib and financial backer of the Butcher of Benghazi, the orange skinned Drumpf.

See, 2.0....you're just like your closet man crush 1.0. You have the balls to ridicule me when I said that when it comes to the Nebraska Head Football Coach, that I ride for the brand....I support whoever the coach is. You're riding for the brand when you support whoever the Republican nominee is, especially when he's a New York liberal who's only connection to the word "conservative" is the word "con".

Riddle me this...would you support Cruz if he became the nominee?

Carson was on his way back to Florida when a Cruz supporter tweeted he was going back to Florida, probably shouldn't have added the part about withdrawing, Not the dirtiest trick in politics but the media sure made hay with it.

really? .. what has he done so far to make you think that?

He was sore when he was losing..............................

that is an opinion.. not a fact..

I saw a man reacting to a very negative campaign ran by Trump. but not a sore loser..

in fact he dropped out quite graciously if you ask me..

As he bowed out, Cruz did not even mention the presumptive nominee.

my take on Donalds recent rant towards the GOP is that no one wants to be his running mate and he is STUCK with Christie..

a bit of old news..
Today, Trump came as close as he’s come yet to naming who that person might be. And I know some of you are going to be disappointed, while others of you will love it.

Donald Trump on Tuesday named Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) when asked about his possible running mate in 2016.

“Ted Cruz is now agreeing with me 100 percent,” he said when asked about his vice presidential pick, according to Lifezette.

“Well, I like him,” Trump told radio host Laura Ingraham during her broadcast. “He’s backed everything I’ve said.”

Unlike most of the Republican presidential hopefuls, Cruz has mostly refrained from attacking Trump, even appearing alongside him at a rally in September against the Iran nuclear deal.

The pair has also struck similar tones on topics such as border security and illegal immigration.

so why turn on Cruz now? ... Did thin-skinned Donald get told NO? and is throwing another tantrum?

Liberalism 101, let emotion guide you, do not let facts get in the way. When disagreeing in the face of facts that prove your position incorrect, blame the opposition of what you yourself are guilty of:

Cruz is definitely a sore loser.
