The Obama administration is considering funding many more police officers in public schools to secure campuses, a leading Democratic senator said, part of a broad gun violence agenda that is likely to include a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips and universal background checks.

The school safety initiative, one of several under consideration, would make federal dollars available to schools that want to hire police officers and install surveillance equipment, although it is not nearly as far-ranging as the National Rifle Association's proposal for armed guards in every U.S. school.

Sounds great! Just one question, why should federal tax dollars fund security for individual districts? If a district wants armed/increased security, the district needs to put it in their budget and if a local school tax increase is needed, so be it.

I like the idea of surveillance equipment. Then we can stream all the little children being shot without protection and plaster the criminal's pictures all over the news making them more famous. That will for sure teach them. Because if there is one thing a suicidal crazy person doesn't want, is to create attention for themselves.

Waste of time; waste of money. As has probably been discussed on here on other threads, those whose minds are sick or those who are bent on destroying the innocent will find a way to do so. It should be up to each individual school district to choose, but if the feds don't lift some of the laws concerning a school zone, my bet is that the security officer would still be outgunned by the nutcase. This has been happening for a long time, but because of the increase in population, the way that we now deal with mental issues and problems, and sorry to say, lack of responsible parenting, school shootings have been on the increase. That does not mean that guns should be outlawed---until we come back around to moral responsibility, doing what is right and teaching our children what is right, and finally admitting when we know loved ones are a threat to society---shootings will continue. The US pendulum seems to swing between sympathy and apathy---until we hit empathetic and make the hard decisions based on facts--not emotion--we will continue to ride the roller coaster...one rash decision after another. I feel terrible for those who are left to deal with such a disaster, and I thank God everyday that I have never had to experience anything even close...but it is not the gun---it's the human being behind the gun.
