"Influenza pandemics must be taken seriously precisely because of their capacity to spread rapidly to every country in the world," Chan said. “New diseases by definition are poorly understood and influenza viruses are notorious for their rapid mutation and unpredictable behavior.”

In Mexico, where the flu is believed to have originated, officials said Wednesday the disease is now confirmed or suspected in 159 deaths, and nearly 2,500 illnesses.

"The good news is that we are better prepared for an influenza pandemic than anytime in our history," she said, adding "it really is all of humanity that is under threat in a pandemic."

Are you questioning the pandemic's Political party or the new source's? :D :D

Just kind of figured if she was straight and conservative, the libs would try to discredit everything she advised. Apparently Obama is listening to her so she must be at least a little left.

I don't know who Dr. Chan is-- but I've watched 2 Congressional Hearings and several press conferences- and the one that is really impressive- knows her stuff- and seems to have almost received total confidence from both the press and the Congressmen is Rear Admiral Anne Schuchat from the Centers for Disease Control....

A petite greying very impishly attractive lady- who appears in full uniform (with a lot of gold on her sleave)-and altho she speaks quietly seems to command the conversation....

You realize that the WHO is not a US organization right? It is an international organization and Dr. Chan is not a US voter - Dem or Repub. Nor does she play in US politics.

If I had access to a computer I could google her and read all about her.

Dr Margaret Chan, from the People's Republic of China, obtained her medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. She joined the Hong Kong Department of Health in 1978, where her career in public health began.

In 1994, Dr Chan was appointed Director of Health of Hong Kong. In her nine-year tenure as director, she launched new services to prevent the spread of disease and promote better health. She also introduced new initiatives to improve communicable disease surveillance and response, enhance training for public health professionals, and establish better local and international collaboration. She effectively managed outbreaks of avian influenza and of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

In 2003, Dr Chan joined WHO as Director of the Department for Protection of the Human Environment. In June 2005, she was appointed Director, Communicable Diseases Surveillance and Response as well as Representative of the Director-General for Pandemic Influenza. In September 2005, she was named Assistant Director-General for Communicable Diseases.

Dr Chan was appointed to the post of Director-General on 9 November 2006. Her term will run through June 2012.

You realize that the WHO is not a US organization right? It is an international organization and Dr. Chan is not a US voter - Dem or Repub. Nor does she play in US politics.

Maybe it's a stretch to say this....but the word WORLD in the title of the organization would/should ' tip' ya off that it's not Rep or Dem

Kind of like the World Series in Baseball right? :D

The whole point here folks is that this flu does not care what party its victims are affiliated with.
