Obama claims the Republicans are the reason nothing is getting done but is that the truth? Democraps continually say the Republicans have not passed any bills is that the Truth?
The question should be how many of the bills the Republican Controlled House got off Reid's Senate stonewalling desk to be even voted on in the DEMOCRAT CONTROLED SENATE?
Just maybe the Democrats should step up to the plate and stop the crap with their attitude that THEY WON THEY WRITE THE BILLS if they want to get anything done. Every time Obama says "if you have some good ideas bring them to me" I want to gag as we all know Republicans have been bring ideas all along and he has basically told them to stick their ideas where the sun doesn't shine as HE IS THE PRESIDENT and he is not going to ALLOW THEM TO HAVE ANY SAY. If they want to change Obamacare it is THE LAW OF THE LAND but if Obama wants to change the law to give one of his Democrap buddies a break, out comes the Executive Order Pen.
Fact Checker searched for all bills “passed/agreed to in House” that were introduced during the three years from Oct. 7, 2010 through this past Monday.
The results? During the past three years, the U.S. House of Representatives has not passed “no bills.” In fact, the current session of the House alone has passed 269. If we add in the two previous sessions of Congress — still just covering bills introduced in the past three years — the House has passed a total of 1,203 bills.
Fact Checker will do a little mind reading here: Maybe Galli meant that the House hasn’t passed any bills that eventually became law, just one-sided legislation with no hope of enactment but that would make constituents feel like they were fighting the good fight.
If that’s the case, the claim is still incorrect. At least 43 bills have been approved by the current U.S. House and signed by the president.
If we include the two previous sessions and still deal only with bills introduced in the past three years, the House has OK’d 943 bills that were signed by President Obama.
Some of the bills passed by the current group in the House and signed by Obama were political no-brainers — such as honoring the four little girls killed when the Ku Klux Klan set off a bomb at a black church 50 years ago in Alabama. Others were examples of bureaucratic tedium: “To specify the size of the precious-metal blanks that will be used in the production of the National Baseball Hall of Fame commemorative coins.”
Still others were things that could be considered controversial or have been controversial in the past: reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, increasing the amount the Federal Emergency Management Agency can borrow for flood insurance, and the No Budget No Pay Act, which suspended the government’s debt limit in May and delayed pay for members of Congress until they passed a budget.
Many bills that were signed into law this year originated in the House, such as the Bipartisan Student Loan Certainty Act of 2013, which sets limits and creates more stability regarding student loan rates, and the FOR VETS Act of 2013, which authorizes transfers of federal surplus property to help groups that assist veterans.
Fact Checker contacted Brian Baluta, spokesman for Mark Amodei, a Republican and U.S. House member representing Nevada’s 2nd congressional district covering Washoe County.
Baluta pointed out that seven bills have been passed just this month by the U.S. House with Democratic support.
He also cited two bills and one amendment proposed by Amodei that were approved by the House and have a good chance of becoming law:
• The NAS Fallon Housing and Safety Development Act, which would transfer 400 acres from the Bureau of Land Management to the Fallon Naval Air Station so the base can grow.
• An amendment to an appropriations bill that would shift $44 million for mandatory overtime to regional Veterans Affairs offices with the worst disability claims backlogs (Reno’s backlog is second worst after Los Angeles, Baluta said).
• The National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act, which was supported by the entire Nevada House delegation, and would help development of Nevada’s mining industry.
The verdict
Although the Republican-controlled House of Representatives has blocked many Democratic efforts — this is what opposing parties do — it’s wildly incorrect to say that it has passed no legislation in the past three years. Indeed, the U.S. House has approved hundreds of bills that have become law over that time, including a few dozen this year.
