Why ANWR?

In the next 30 days the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) will release a new report giving an accurate resource assessment of the Bakken Oil Formation that covers North Dakota and portions of South Dakota and Montana. With new horizontal drilling technology it is believed that from 175 to 500 billion barrels of recoverable oil are held in this 200,000 square mile reserve that was initially discovered in 1951. The USGS did an initial study back in 1999 that estimated 400 billion recoverable barrels were present but with prices bottoming out at $10 a barrel back then the report was dismissed because of the higher cost of horizontal drilling techniques that would be needed, estimated at $20-$40 a barrel.

By comparison, Saudi Arabia has the largest known oil reserves at 260 billion barrels and the part of ANWR being discussed has an estimated 1.9-16 billion barrels..

And that part of the country has laid out the red carpet for oil developers with areas like Sidney already saying they would welcome new refineries..

So what makes ANWR so dang important to the Repubs :???:

ANWR isn't the only place in the USA that we are not allowed to drill and I don't care if you're Democrat or Republican, we need to harvest our own oil so we don't need to keep getting our oil from countries that hate us and want us dead. Now there are many more Democrats that vote to stop drilling in this country, but there are plenty of goofy Republicans voting the same way.

Check out this link to see the areas we can't drill but countries like China can suck our oil right out from under us because we aren't allowed to go after OUR OWN OIL!!! I find that inexcusable.

I'm not disagreeing with you LB-- but it seems like all we hear is ANWR every time we talk oil prices or anything about oil- and if you look at it - in comparison they have a minute amount of oil,and in a remote area, with arctic conditions thats a long ways from refineries- but you hear few Repubs getting up and promoting drilling in Montana, or the Dakotas-- or developing uses for the coal reserves in these states... About the only Repub is Governor Hoeven of ND-- with Gov. Schweitzer of MT being the loudest proponent and taking it to the national media...I think he's the one that brought Obama on board...
But if you mention developing new energy to any Repub- and its immediately ANWR and all the fault of those darn Dems not letting them drill there....
You'd think Cheney could remember where Wyo is :???:

It's one of those hot button issues, like gun control and abortion, that most people just react to without thinking. And that's what has kept Republicans riding high for a long time.

Not sure why ANWR gets all the mentioning maybe it is the easiest and cheapest to get. I don't know.

But just because ANWR has became the chosen word to use, when used it represents ALL of the blocks that Democrats put on drilling for oil not just ANWR.

The bigger picture here is the Democrats block us from getting our own oil and then they put strict EPA regulations on the little bit that we do get.

It does not take a rocket scientist to know which party pushes up the cost of gasoline. Just the announcement that we will open up all and any drilling on American soil would cause the speculators to push down the price of gasoline substantially.

Funny how we go and beg OPEC to increase production but we will not do the same thing in our own country. Kind of hypocritical huh?
