The US decision to go to war in Iraq was not based on any connection between Sadaam and the events of 9/11. The decision to go to war in Iraq was based on the broader war on terrorism.
Sadaam was repeatedly violating UN resolutions he agreed to at the end of the Persian Gulf War concerning his development of weapons of mass destruction. He was continuing to pursue the development of these weapons at the same time that he was harboring known terrorists.
(After al-Zarqawi was wounded in the war in Afghanistan, he journeyed to Baghdad to undergo surgery and recuperation.) The fear for the US was that Sadaam would develop and share these weapons with the terrorists.
Many people have opined that the Bush Administration went to war in Iraq because of oil, because they claimed Sadaam was behind the attack on 9/11, because of non-existent weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), or because George W. had to "finish the war his daddy started." All of these are trite and simplistic and none is accurate.
The Bush Administration never claimed any connection between Sadaam and 9/11.
This current war in Iraq is no more about oil than the last war in Iraq, even though the same claim was made then.
This current war in Iraq is about the reasons stated above. The Persian Gulf War was about removing the Iraqi Army from a sovereign nation that it had invaded and was occupying. If that war had been about oil, then why didn’t we remain in Kuwait after the war and take all the oil we wanted? And why didn’t we remove Sadaam from power then? Because the objective of that war was to re-gain Kuwait’s sovereignty and destroy Sadaam’s war-making capability. The Persian Gulf War ended when those objectives were met.
Prior to the invasion of Iraq in 2003 the presence of WMDs was confirmed not only by our own intelligence community but by the intelligence agencies of several other nations, including Great Britain and Russia, and by the United Nations itself.
The Bush Administration did not “lie” or “mislead.” The WMDs were present in Iraq and evidence of that has been found. To date, “stockpiles” have not been found but that doesn’t mean they won’t be. (Sadaam buried at least one jet fighter in the sand in the desert.) One also has to wonder why Sadaam did not stop the invasion of his nation if he did not, indeed, have WMDs. All he had to do to stop the invasion was to open his nation up to inspection. When the invasion was imminent, wouldn’t that have been the smarter thing to do if he did not have WMDs?
sorry it is long winded but i felt it was worth the time to post it!
mainly for DIS and KOLO, if they have the courage to read it and understand what it says!!!!
