Why more young people aren't in ag

There are quite a few ranches here in my area that have come up for sale. Most are older ranchers retiring, or for health reasons are selling.
There was a couple from SD in the local restaurant the other day looking for a ranch to buy here. They really like this area. Really nice folks. I hope they find something they like. :)
Here is whats for sale that I know of....

http://www.landquest.com/detailmain.asp?prop=07201&curpage=1&search=newlist (I was interested in this place last year when it was for sale, but I couldn't make it up to look at it , then it sold pretty quick. I'm not sure why its for sale again, I assume its was an investor as the price is up by quite a bit compared to what it was listed for last year).

(next door to above property) (modular home is ok, but out buildings and corrals are not good)

I think one of the reasons youngsters steer away from ranching is that it's a lot a damned hard work and they don't often get the benefits we do from it.

For example, my nephews help me build fence in 100 degree temperatures and talk about going to college, law school, etc. so they won't have to build fence. I tell them I don't have to build fence. I tell them I want to because I want my cattle safe and my cows bred to bulls I choose. They realize I'm insane...that they either weren't born with the cattle loving gene in their blood or they grew up and never got infected with it.

Also, when I sell my steers, I get the check. So, they get the hard work and miss the payday and think the whole business is for the birds. I reckon if they sold ten steers and got a check for $7,000 here and there, they may look at it a little different.

DocHarris sure had a good post earlier along with a bunch of others. This is a good forum with a lot of nice people and only a few curmudgeons spoiling for a fight like I see in other places. Some places no matter what you post, someone wants to fight about it and I just don'e have time for that. Thanks to all of you and I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a forum for ranch talk would be full of good folks. That reminds me--I have a question for you all and will post a new thread.

I believe some of the reason more are not returning to the land involves the wives-- many have very good careers/professions that sometimes can't be done from a ranching area...See fewer husband/wife teams that both have the same commitment to the land and ranch anymore....

Also getting to be fewer women that will put up with deprivations (lack of income, isolated living, inability sometimes to use their education in chosen professions, etc. etc.) involved during the years of low income building up and paying for the high costs of buying/paying for a ranching operation- especially when the husband and they both can walk out of school many times and get jobs that start out at $150,000+ yearly household income...

I see a lot of ranching prospects quit the business when the wife starts looking at the nice houses their girlfriends live in, nice cars, boats, playtoys, vacations and everything else their friends have-- off the husbands nonranching job-- which gives him weekends and days off during the summer to play at the lakefront- while the rancher is haying night and day...And then if they live in/near town they can work too and have their madd money...

The reality is it's harder for cows to support a family anymore. With raising insurance costs, gasoline prices, feed prices, and land values going up it's just hard for cows to support a family. My grandparents raised 11 children on 3500 acreas and today it barely supports one family. The 300 - 350 cow rancher is becoming a thing of the past and it's harder to aquire more land to run larger herds on.

OT....don't blame the women folks 100%. Some of the men folks want all the flash & dash and no work.

I married a man afraid of dirt!!! Useless as tits on a boarhog...but man he was a looker. But I sure got tired of looking at all that " clean" and booted him.

Heck, if anything the women folks are what keep the farms around here a float.. Be it town jobs that provide steady income or beter yet, insurance, or being the buffer between Dad and kids when disagreements do pick up.. Now, some of the boys/men have had some alcohol problems or keeping it in their pants problems and that leads to divorces and land grabs by who is left but that is their own doing..

I don't blame the guys getting out getting all the money the can get.. Or their families who don't want to farm doing it.. Don't blame them at all.. It isn't their responsibility to help someone else get started..If they want too, more power to them but only if they want too. The 1031 exchanges, land dvelopment and hunting industry seems to be what drives the land value around here.. IF land was better tracked to production it would be a heck of a lot easier but I don't seen that happeneing againf or a long time if ever.

Didn't mean to blame the women Kola-- but the chances of getting a "couple" that had like you say " both had dirt under their fingernails" and experience growing up on a farm/ranch are getting less and less daily-- and unless they both are happy it just doesn't seem to work out...

So many young men and women that, even just during their time off to college got so enthralled by the marvels of bigger city life- the nightlife, the shopping, the convenience of not having to travel 500 miles for a Doctors appointment, the salarys being paid in the urban areas, the idea of actually having days off - that they don't want to return to the rural setting....

And Kola-- I have seen some of those women that are all flash & dash too...

Kola, did we marry the same fella  Only thing is mine promised that living on a farm was his greatest joy in life. Then the money got real important, so important that I supported us both and he stopped working to further his education. Didnt work for over 8 years if I recall correctly....

Kola, Judith and all you other Ranchers.net Ladies, I'll be the first to admit that my wife is the glue that holds our outfit together. My Mom was the same for me and my Dad, and she still is. Both my Grandmothers were and still are the same. Women of "true grit" as Little Sister once said of Rooster Cogburn. It may sound a little brash of a description for a Lady, but for ranch wives, Mommas and Grandmas, I don't think any of them will take offense.

Yep - same here. I'd sure hate to have to keep up with all of the work that mine does in a day.

She's got enough time left over to grow some roses if she wants 'em.
