(Pine Ridge)-A very sad and tragic incident occurred on the outskirts of Pine Ridge Tuesday evening.

Oglala Sioux Department of Tribal Safety Deputy Chief of Police John Mousseau has the details…

(Listen to soundbite for details)

The child did pass away from the dog bites and excessive trauma. The child is identified as eight year old Jayla Rodriguez.

Mousseau says dog bites on the reservation are getting a little more frequent.

Mousseau reminds parents to never leave their children unattended.

Funeral Services for Rodriguez are currently pending under the direction of the Sioux Funeral Home in Pine Ridge.

Oglala Sioux officials have rounded up and killed a number of dogs on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation following the death of an 8-year-old girl who was attacked and killed by a pack on Tuesday.

Deputy Police Chief John Mousseau tells the Rapid City Journal that "a horse-trailer full" of dogs was killed Thursday.

Some residents are upset by what they say were unnecessary dog seizures and brutal tactics.

Tuesday's death happened while the girl was sledding near a housing complex. It renewed concerns among tribal leaders about the longstanding problem of packs of roaming dogs.

Pine Ridge resident Joe Locust described Thursday's dog roundup as "Gestapo tactics."

Mousseau said all stray dogs are being viewed as potential threats to public safety.

We had a friend who was a teacher on a reserve farther north than us. The first year she was there she was told "Keep your dog in the house this week. It's dog shooting week." Every year they have a designated "dog shooting week" to cut down the population. If you have dogs that are important to you, then you restrain them during that week to keep them safe. Otherwise, they are free game. It worked.
