Obama has made some inept foriegn policy moves. but his latest may damage our credibility as a nation for a long time to come..

We use treaties to forge agreements.. most in our favor..

and we are expected to honor the agreements.. at least the main intent of those agreements..

over the years some have fallen apart.. but for the most part I would say we have honored the intent of all them.. only backing out when the other side failed to uphold their side of the bargain..

but now... with Obama that credibility is one the line.. and the consequences are dire for future treaties and agreements..

as Tam had pointed out.. we have a treaty with the Ukraine.

my guess is they should have kept their weapons..

will Obama honor it.. or will Obama destroy our credibility?
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the newly independent Ukraine had on its territory what was the third largest strategic nuclear weapons arsenal in the world. It was larger than those of Britain, France, and China combined. On June 1, 1996 Ukraine became a non-nuclear nation when it sent the last of its 1,900 strategic nuclear warheads to Russia for dismantling.[1] The first shipment of nuclear weapons from Ukraine to Russia (by train) was in March 1994.[2] In return for giving up its nuclear weapons, Ukraine, the United States of America, Russia, and the United Kingdom signed the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, pledging to respect Ukraine territorial integrity, a pledge that was arguably broken by Russia's 2014 invasion of Crimea

The Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances is an international treaty signed on 5 December 1994, providing security assurances by its signatories in connection to Ukraine's accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The Memorandum was originally signed by three nuclear-powers, the Russian Federation, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom. China and France later gave individual statements of assurance as well.

In response to the crisis, the Ukrainian parliament has requested that the Memorandum's signatories reaffirm their commitment to the principles enshrined in the treaty

Before voting on accession, Ukraine demanded from Russia, the USA, France and the United Kingdom a written statement that these powers undertook to extend the security guarantees to Ukraine. Instead security assurances to Ukraine (Ukraine published the documents as guarantees given to Ukraine)

so the US, Russia and UK translated Guarantees to assurances.

if Obama uses the text of the treaty to weasel out of upholding our end.. it will set a dangerous precedent.

With this in mind.. few if any countries will enter treaties aimed at demilitarization with the US in the future.. and all this credibility now rests on Obama's shoulders..

but the blame squarely belongs on all those who voted for that inept idiot.

Except for promises to raise taxes, attempt to ruin the coal industry, and fundamentally change the country, his other promises have been mostly meaningless. Why would the integrity of promises made abroad be any better? Notwithstanding attempts to appease his brethren.
