Republicans Like Gingrich for President
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich received surprisingly strong support from Republican voters in an online poll by vote.com — even though he hasn't entered the 2008 presidential race.
The Web site asked: "If the Republican presidential primary were held today, who would you vote for?"
After nearly 30,000 votes had been counted, Gingrich topped the survey with 41 percent, while Rudolph Giuliani finished a strong second at 33 percent.
Mitt Romney ran a distant third at 12 percent, followed by John McCain (7 percent), Sam Brownback (3 percent), Mike Huckabee (3 percent) and Chuck Hagel, 1 percent.
Vote.com CEO Eileen McGann said: "This survey shows the strong support for Gingrich getting into the race among Republican base voters and demonstrates how little progress McCain has made in appealing to the core of the GOP."
