US election 2012: Rick Santorum could still win Iowa caucus
Iowan Republican officials have been certifying ballots collected after the Jan 3 vote, in order to draw up a final tally. They are expected to announce their findings shortly.
Previously, final results have differed from the original counts submitted on caucus night by hundreds of votes, but this has not changed the candidates' final standings.
However with most of the paperwork already in, Iowa GOP executive director Chad Olson told the Register they are already noticing some missing information and a few errors, with some favoring Romney and others Santorum.
However, the 30,015 counted this year for Mr Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, was just eight greater than the 30,007 tallied for Mr Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator. Citing a campaign source who was being updated on the scores, The Washington Examiner reported that by Monday afternoon, Mr Santorum was leading Mr Romney by 80 votes.
The Iowa Republican Party rules give the party 14 days after their caucuses to report certified results after the caucus is held. The 14th day is today.
