Will the REAL Repub Party Stand Up !!

Former Senator Alan Simpson blasts ideological rigidity within the GOP in a 2011 speech :
“In my party, we give each other the saliva test of purity and then we lose and bitch for four years … We’ll elect the guy who’s against you 100 percent of the time, instead of taking the guy who’s with you 75 percent of the time. That’s pretty stupid.”

This is why I think as long as any Repub candidate has to go to the far right in the primaries to please the radical right (ex.- tea party, john bircher's, radical evangelists, etc., etc.) they can not come back and win in a general election....

Alan also blasts current Congressmen- both Repub and Dem for their partisan bickering and inability to act like adults and work together to accomplish something for the best of the nation...

Full speech: http://www.riponsociety.org/news_6-14-11.htm

This current fiasco with the Republicans is better emphasized by having 5 different Repub rebuttal speech's to the State of the Union- giving 5 different messages ...

When one response becomes five

01/28/14 02:03 PM—Updated 01/28/14 02:13 PM

By Steve Benen

Every modern White House has invested an enormous amount of time and effort into crafting the strongest possible State of the Union address. But let’s not forget that the president’s opposing party has taken great pains to write carefully scripted SOTU responses, too.

Putting aside how many people are watching and/or open to persuasion, these official responses give the opposition party a rare opportunity: a national platform, carried by all the major networks, to say whatever it wishes to say. What’s the key message a party wants to share with millions of Americans? This is their chance to let us know.

At least it was.

Four years ago, for the first time, Americans got to hear three speeches instead of two. President Obama delivered the State of the Union address, which was followed by two opposition responses: one official message from the Republican Party, one from the Tea Party.

Tonight, meanwhile, will be a veritable free for all. There will be one Democrat, the president, enjoying a high-profile stage. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) will deliver the official Republican response.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), meanwhile, will deliver a Tea Party response. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) will deliver his own response. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.) will deliver an official Republican response in Spanish. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) will apparently deliver some kind of pre-buttal before the speech and its rebuttals.

As Rachel joked on the show last week, “If Republicanism was a religion, this would be the part called sectarian warfare.”

In the larger context, this sectarian warfare, now hard to miss, offers an interesting peek into the divisions that drive contemporary GOP politics.

Indeed, it wasn’t long ago that Republicans not only limited SOTU responses to one official message, party leaders wouldn’t have tolerated any other scenario. Republican lawmakers who deliberately chose to step on – or worse, contradict – their party’s scripted message risked raising the ire of party leaders and insiders. Only one SOTU response was given because no Republican in Congress would dare challenge – or even think to challenge – the party’s message operation.

Those norms have collapsed. Jeremy Peters had a good piece this morning, noting, “The shift speaks volumes about politics today: the value placed on the individual brand over the larger organization, and the way social media and technology have torn down barriers to fame and influence.”

“There is no clear leadership in the Republican Party right now, no clear direction or message, and no way to enforce discipline,” said Mark McKinnon, a veteran Republican strategist who has become an outspoken critic of his party. “And because there’s a vacuum, and no shortage of cameras, there are plenty of actors happy to audition.”

Kevin Madden, a Republican strategist and a former aide to House Speaker John Boehner, added, “The message development for the party and on Capitol Hill has been flipped. It used to be that congressional leadership could develop the broad outline of the party’s message, and everyone else could echo it. We’re no longer in a place where members are echoing leadership. They’re competing with leadership.”

No wonder the Dems keep winning- the Repubs have NO message... Instead they are going in 5 different ways all using their agendas to campaign for themselves...

I wonder what old Ronnie who came up with his "11th Commandment" which said "Speak no ill of your fellow Republican" would say about this crew.... :???:

We've already ran two moderates in the last 2 elections. I'd like to see some more black conservatives run so the left's extreme hypocrisy can once again be exposed when they work to destroy them with a vengeance for everyone to see. Maybe they can work their magic on Dr. Ben Carson.

What was the left's message again? To fundamentally change the country? More socialism? Higher taxes? Yep, people will never get enough of that.

I still think McCain would have won the election if he hadn't had to pander the far right and pick Palin as a running mate... I followed a lot of websites/blogs during that election- and Independents, moderate Republicans, women, and minority folks that had planned on voting Republican or McCain ran as fast as they could to the Obama camp- and the number 1 reason they gave is they were scared of/disliked Palin and her far right beliefs....
A couple of weeks after he chose his VP- I could tell they were going to lose and it never got any better with the infighting between them dividing the campaign..

I can imagine, too, that a woman that actually gave birth to a Down Syndrome child would be a real turn off for many Dems/Independents. The funny thing is, that things that Governor Palin warned us about have come to fruition. Sort of like what is happening in this video, which is going on nationwide. Got to be some serious buyers remorse going on, and is the next socialist going to be so widely trusted at face value?

she had high poll numbers from both parties in Alaska prior to the election..

her work in Alaska looked like a liberal dream come true.. she took on the oil board.. broke up the old guy network.. took on big oil..

cleaned up corruption.. by taking on the ol guy republicans..

and instituted policy and legislation to improve housing for the poor,.. education,..

to be honest.. Palin is a lefty when it comes to actual accomplishments.

Palin had a 89% and 93% approval rating in May 2007

http://us4palin.com/accomplishments/

Proposed a $2.6 billion investment in the Education Fund to help fund public education for the future.

Provided Alaskan residents with a “resource rebate” to help offset high energy costs

Lowered unemployment insurance tax rates

ACES: In 2007, Governor Palin signed ACES—Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share—a net tax on oil profits

ACES replaced the corruption tainted oil tax plan of the previous administration which was passed in secret and ultimately lead to the indictment of several Alaskan state officials and oil company personnel.

AGIA (Alaska Gasline Inducement Act) — After many decades of unsuccessful attempts to bring a gas pipeline project into existence, Governor Palin and her team introduced to Alaskans the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA)

Petroleum Systems Integrity Office (PSIO): Governor Palin created the “Petroleum Systems Integrity Office” (PSIO) in April 2007:

PSIO addresses lax maintenance practices in the oil industry. PSIO requires industry to establish and maintain quality assurance programs, and requires the state to inspect facilities to ensure operators comply with those programs. PSIO will also search for any gaps in laws, regulations or industry practices that threaten the integrity of the state’s oil and gas infrastructure. If necessary, the office will step in and exert the state’s authority as issuer of development leases to ensure the system and the state’s interests are protected.

Took on “Big Oil”: Governor Palin stood up for her constituents when dealing with the powerful oil companies:

"What bothers me is that Alaska tried it Exxon’s way. The result was a contract that is not viable. It did not have the support of the public or the legislature. That’s why we need a competitive, open, and transparent process,” said Governor Palin. “It’s painfully obvious that Exxon Mobil does not want that process. We know exactly where we’re going and have a plan to move forward. Exxon doesn’t like that plan because it puts the interests of Alaska and the nation, first – and not Exxon.”

Served on national energy committees: Governor Palin served as Vice Chair of the National Governors Association and as the Natural Resource Committee and Chairman of the Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission.
Chair, Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission

Governor Palin fought for and signed sweeping bipartisan ethics legislation which restricted lobbyists, improved disclosure laws, and improved executive and legislative branch ethics laws.
In the face of corruption, she took on her own party when it was necessary: She has bucked her party’s old guard.

She released her ACES—oil tax bill—to her constituents 17 days prior to the special legislative session where it was to be discussed.
She opened up natural gas pipeline deals to all potential parties.
She put the state checkbook online.

Governor Palin did not allow lobbyists in her office.

Forward funded education to allow districts greater flexibility.

Supported increased vocational training and early education funding.
Offered to personally talk to students considering dropping out of school.
Opened up opportunity to Alaskan students to participate in regional medical school
Increased overall funding for special needs education 175%.

Increased funding for the Alaska Youth Challenge Academy 18.8% in her first year in office (FY2008) compared to her predecessor’s final year (FY2007).
Governor Palin’s FY2008 capital budget included $2.5 million for special needs housing (a 42% increase in capital funding over her predecessor) and $250,000 for Special Olympics facility upgrades.

Expanded Alaska’s Senior benefits program, even signing emergency authorization between the legislature’s general and special sessions.

Governor Palin Signs ‘Safe Haven’ Bill Into Law Bill allows parents to surrender newborns without prosecution

Extended the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.
Governor Palin signed House Bill 120 into law. The legislation, sponsored by Representative Anna Fairclough, extends the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault for another five years. The Council was first created in 1981 to reduce the causes and incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault. It also distributes grants to programs that help victims of those crimes.

Administrative Order 236 relates to the Alaska Homeless Council, a panel established by the prior administration to help curb homelessness in the state. The measure signed by Governor Palin today expands the council’s duties to include work on developing an affordable housing trust. It also adds six new members to the panel: a representative of a regional Native housing authority, a person from municipal government, and four members with experience in housing development or affordable housing.

House Bill 182, sponsored by Representative Bob Lynn, amends the Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Act by making the offering of a promotional check, through the mail or by other means, a deceptive practice in violation of the Consumer Protection Act.

“This bill protects unsuspecting consumers from being duped into an unintended contract by cashing an unexpected but deceptive check for a small amount with large consequences,” Representative Lynn said. “Business ethics is just as important as any other kind of ethics.”

yep if she had a big D the liberals would have touted her actual accomplishments instead of bashing her for crap they made up..

Edited to ad challenge..

Can any one on this board show an example of Palin's accomplishments that is conservative? center right? far right?

how about extreme right?

not talk.. or commentary.. but actual accomplishments

and then if you find a few ,.. could you at least explain why they are sooo bad?

This issue has bothered me for some time... liberals who attack Palin .. yet ignore her record..

the FACT is had she ran on her record instead of McCain's,.. she would have beaten Obama.

I often hear a politician say one thing to "get elected" and then do what he or she wants ignoring the will of the citizens. with a 90+ approval rating as a Governor she was doing the will of the people..

I've researched Palin's record.. simple fact is she worked and did what many liberals advocate for.. she fought for the same principles that liberals admire..

Yet time and time again the liberals attack the caricature of her they drew..

fact is I really doubt the liberals can find any "far right" accomplishments on Palin's resume'.

I realize you will have to search a bit through a fairly long list to find one.. but there a few things that would make the TEA party back her to this day... despite her liberal accomplishments.

A few of the issues I remember that had women that left the McCain camp screaming on the blogs were her opposition to sex education in public schools, requiring rape victims to pay for the cost of the rape exams, rape kits, and the lab examinations, her extreme rightwing fundamentalist Pentecostal Christian views, her oppositions to abortion, her belief schools should teach Creationism, and her believing in book banning/censorship of public libraries... Her covering up of a sexual harassment scandal in Alaska didn't help her with the women... Many also didn't think she would back women in their goal to get equal pay for equal work...

But it was quite apparent the Independent, moderate Republican, and educated women flocked away from McCain in droves after he brought Palin on board...

FACT
Palin supports sex education in public schools that encourage abstinence along with teaching about contraception
