Nippon won’t use US beef

(Nikkei)--Nippon Meat Packers Inc., Itoham Foods Inc. and Marudai Food Co.

have decided not to use U.S. beef in hamburger patties, roast beef and other

items they produce for now, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Tuesday

morning edition.

Since beef from the U.S. was banned following the December 2003 discovery

of a case of mad cow disease there, the companies switched to Australia and New

Zealand for their main sources of beef for their processed-meat items.

They supply meat to distributors and restaurants, with some sold under

the companies' own brands after being used in precooked hamburger patties,

roast beef, salami and other items processed at their factories.

Until supply amounts and quality can be assured, the companies will hold

off on using U.S. beef in their products because they will need to modify

production lines once they start using it again.
