Windstorm fuels fire, prompts local state of emergency

A grass fire fuelled by high winds has prompted a state of emergency in the County of Paintearth in west-central Alberta.
CBC News
Heavy winds knocked out power to 5,000 people in the Edmonton region.

Coronation RCMP closed Highway 36 from Highway 12 south to Garden Plain Road because of the fire. But Julie Falkenburg, the county's director of disaster services, said no other communities are threatened.
Paintearth is 275 km southeast of Edmonton and 325 km northeast of Calgary.
Weather warnings forecasting gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour were cancelled by late Tuesday afternoon for central and southeastern parts of the province, including Red Deer, Medicine Hat and Lloydminster.
Only one wind warning remained - for Cypress Hill -by Tuesday night.
About 5,000 people in the Edmonton region - mainly in St. Albert and Morinville - were hit with power outages early Tuesday morning when winds damaged power lines, but officials said most have been restored.
Small areas in Fort Saskatchewan and south of Sherwood Park, as well as Lac La Biche and Wetaskiwin are still without power, said an official with FortisAlberta, an electricity company.
A windstorm in British Columbia that left almost 200,000 without power at its peak Monday is crossing over the Rockies with the same intensity, meteorologist Bob Cormier said.
Environment Canada reported winds of 122 kilometres an hour in Waterton Park Gate in southern Alberta Tuesday.
