Now that's not what you guys are thinking.

This afternoon a fellow came down to pick Winterfat seeds. To bad he hadn't made it last week as the wind we had stripped lots off as the ground was white under some of the plants. He needed 12 grams of viable seed to take to the green house that is going to multiply it for him. The patch I found for him was the best and thickest he had ever seen.
The intent is to develop a mixture to provide stock piled grazing using a variety of native grass, Purple Prairie clover, Winterfat and a few others that I can't remember. Winterfat cures off at close to 40% protien.
We looked across the fence where some cows had just been in for a week coming south to the home ranch and a few days going back to winter grazing. I had seen a big Winterfat plant along a cow trail fencing last week and when I looked today it was ate off. Guess they really do like it. :D

I think we maybe picked more Winterfat seed today then has been picked in a while. Ag Canada is to multiply this seed.I think it will be quite some time before it is commercially available and i think it will be slow to establish.

He was talking about just planting a row on the west side of a plot and let the wind spread it naturally.

I wonder if it doesn't grow in that Kamloops area?

BMR-it probably does grow in the kamloops area ,after reading te link i don't think it would tolerate my country because of the abundant moisture conditions.it would be a slooww... starter fo sure.

Winterfat is worth it's weight in gold. Interesting that you could harvest some seeds, BMR. I'd not heard of that before.

You are very fortunate to have some in your pastures. We have some
too, but not a lot. Cattle and sheep sure do good on it in winter.

Oh there's lots of it in places.

Just not places that BMr wants it though. (Or some of the rest of us, either!)
