Florida Woman's Insurance Rate Increases 10X Under Obamacare

"I just want to know why I can't keep what I have. ... Why do I have to be forced into something else?"

8:44 AM, Oct 28, 2013 • By DANIEL HALPER

One Florida woman is going from paying $54 a month to $591 under Obamacare, CBS reports:

"For many, their introduction to the Affordable Care Act has been negative: A broken website, and now cancellation notices from insurance companies, followed by sticker shock over higher prices for the new plans," says a CBS reporter. "It's directly at odds from repeated assurances from the president."

Obama is quoted as saying, "If you like your insurance plan, you will keep it. No one will be able to take that away from you."

"But people across the country are finding out they're losing their existing insurance plans under Obamacare," says the reporter. "In Florida, at least 300,000 people are losing coverage."

"When I got this bill, I was outraged," CBS quotes a 56-year-old Florida resident who got dropped from her health care plan.

Her new plan will be 10 times higher than what she's paying now, jumping from $54 a month to $591.

"What I have right now is what I'm happy with, and I just want to know why I can't keep what I have," says the woman. "Why do I have to be forced into something else?"

What I find doubtful is the rates quoted by people... $54/ month.....$98/ month..... WHERE?

I've never seen a policy under $200, more like $400, in decades....

You can buy a "Catastrophic" plan with a high deductible for somewhere around that. But that is not acceptable under the ACA anymore.

I have a friend who has one such policy for $84 per month, his can only be used now as an additional or supplemental policy.

What happened to "You can keep your insurance"? What if that's all she wanted?

Way back when...when I had 150 employees, I went with very high deductibles to keep the costs down as much as possible. I always told them that if they could piggyback on a spouse's plan, to do so. I considered ours too as being a catastrophic illness type of coverage. The small stuff they had to cover out of pocket. That was the only way to make it work.

I don't want one...I was saying that all the yrs I handled our company ins. plans, and my own, never did I ever see anything that was that cheap.

But, we always kept comprehensive or full benefit on our people. We just chose not to go any other way.

HHS touts low prices for young people under new ObamaCare exchanges

By Elise Viebeck - 10/28/13 06:30 PM ET

Nearly half of single, young adults eligible for ObamaCare's new insurance exchanges can sign up for healthcare plans that cost $50 or less per month, federal health officials said Monday.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a report showing that many young people have access to cheap coverage under the healthcare law because of low-cost plans, federal discounts to make policies more affordable and the Medicaid program.

Overall, according to the report, about 1.3 million uninsured young adults qualify for bronze plans on the exchanges that will cost $50 or less per month after tax credits. A total of 1.9 million might be able to pay $100 or less per month, while 1 million more could qualify for Medicaid, the report said.

The figures refer to people eligible for marketplaces run by or partially run by the federal government. HHS leads or co-leads the exchanges in 34 states.

These are the folks we need to get covered... Those at the age that think they are invincible- that end up being surprised at a young age having a stroke or other major health problem-- or end up in a serious accident and need years and years of treatment and therapy...
This will keep many of the young folks I've seen that were in serious vehicle or sporting accidents from having to declare bankruptcy to get their life back together when they are better....With a $6,350 cap- they should be able to pay that off when they are able to get back to work...

Bronze Plan – Affordable Care Act

What Is the Bronze Plan?

The Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, requires insurance companies in 2014 to offer new categories of health insurance plans to consumers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. These plans will all offer a minimum standard of benefits determined by the government. This minimum standard is known as the plan’s "essential health benefits."

Generally speaking, the Bronze Plan is intended to have the lowest premium of the 4 new categories of plans but charge the highest out-of-pocket costs for healthcare services. For people without group insurance from an employer or other group, the Bronze plan is the minimum health insurance plan in which they can enroll that will satisfy the Affordable Care Act’s mandate for people to purchase health insurance.

What Are The Bronze Plan’s Out-of-Pocket Costs?

Bronze Plans are designed so that insurance companies will pay 60% of covered healthcare expenses with the remaining 40% to be paid by consumers. The consumer’s expenses will be in the form of out-of-pocket fees over and above the cost of the plan’s monthly premium. Out-of-pocket expenses for individuals is expected to be capped at $6,350 annually starting in 2014.

The 40/60 percentages are based on projected use of healthcare services by plan members. The actual out-of-pocket expenses of any single beneficiary may work out to be more or less than this ratio but should remain within the range. Those people whose out-of-pocket limits reach the annual maximum could see their share of healthcare costs fall until a new calendar year begins and the annual limit reset.

Out-of-pocket expenses include fees like deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance. Different plans will approach the 40/60 split in various ways (see the table below) so it is important to research the financial details of a specific plan before deciding which one to purchase. For example, a person who has frequent medical expenses may want a Bronze Plan with a lower deductible (depending on premium) while a healthy person may want the opposite.

You're still not getting this are you OT.

To pay for that insurance, middle income earners will need to pay more. Many of them can't afford it. So it redistributes "wealth" to some, yet lowers "wealth" for more people, by a greater amount. Lowering average "wealth", by raising the collective cost.

It would have been far more beneficial to just buy those without insurance, coverage.

With the cost of obamacare, you could have bought a $5000-$8000 plan and been further ahead as a Country.

Did you take my advice and buy stocks in the insurance companies? Have you looked to see how well the insurance companies are doing?

They are going to double profits, under obamacare. obama's cronies thank obama and gullible voters, such as yourself.

the less then $50 dollars is either accounting for a subsidy.. or putting the person on medicaid..

and most young adults in that low of an income bracket do not have enough income for the policy tax credit to benefit them...

either way someone is going to have to fund the medicaid and subsidies..

the lowest plan I looked at was for $$2,246 per year ,.. or about $188 a month.

which is for a 21 year old non smoking adult making $12,000 a year.
