I made a phone call home from a booth in Billabong, several hundred miles north of Perth in the middle of nowhere. Big windmill, overhead water tank and a Bar. The phone was a crank phone (mid 80s) so I cranked this thing enough to call Canada. The operator came on and said I only had to crank it once. I asked to connect me to Canada. There was silence for a while and she came on and asked where? First overseas call for that operator.
