Well today was the day. I guess you could say "what we work for all year long". Actually the calves will sell tomorrow. But we hauled them all today. Three loads. Vaccinated and wormed all the mama's. Had them turned out.....one load hauled, and the other two loads on the way by 9:30 this mornin. Here's a few pictures of the days activities. (Not all are very good quality....it was foggy foggy this mornin, and we were there startin by 6:30 am)

The guys unloadin their mounts.

All in all done. Ya know....the flies were horrible today. Two days ago we rode around lookin at them, and made the choice not to spray for flies...because they hardly had any. I don't know if it's because of the rain in the last few days or what...but there were a bazillion flies today when we penned them, and we hadn't bought anything to spray them with.

Spent the rest of the day on the tractor mowin pastures. :)

Great pictures, Jersey Lilly. Hope the calves sell very well. I really like the bull calves that were kept. If you didn't live so far away, I'd try to deal you out of them. The spider web is quite ornate, too.

Good luck on your sale.

In spite of the frosts we've had the little black flies have been hungry here since it started raining 10 days back. We rarely get the flies that bother cattle but mosquitos can sure drive them crazy in June and July.

Those open trailers would get you a ticket for being cruel to livestock most of the year here. Our closed in one's would do the same for you I would imagine. Mosquitoes were horrible this year but there has hardly been a fly. Have a great sale.

Great pictures (as usual :) ) The foggy ones are really neat. Let us know how they do at the sale today.

One question...seems like they'd loose quite abit of weight being at the saleyard that long without being weaned? But that may be your only choice too. Hope you have a great sale!

They don't seem to loose too bad. I know they loose some. But that's gonna happen. The main reason we don't wean is because we really don't have anywhere that's set up for it. I'd love to have a weanin pasture. Maybe someday in the future we'll be able to do it. But at this time....sortin em off and haulin em in is about the only way we can do it. Also.....Gettin em in on Friday before the sale on Saturday is alot less stressful on us. Sale starts at 11.....everything went smoothly yesterday. But that's not always the case. We've worked on Saturday mornin in the past...and it just seems that when we've done it that way.....anything and everything that can WILL go wrong LOL Plus by haulin in the day before the sale...we avoid the mile long lines of trucks and trailers waitin to unload on the morning of the sale. You might show up at 10 am and not get unloaded til noon or later some times. And you never know when it's gonna be like that. Plus by doin this...we get early sale numbers. Think there were only 25 head with numbers below ours. That makes a huge difference in what time your calves will sell, since here they are sold one at a time thru the ring.

This has nothing to do with you lily but I find it strange and almost amusing that in Texas where the large scale cattle industry started they sell cattle one at a time through the ring. I guess it's because of all the small herds but up here when the cattle run is on they usually presort the calves and run drafts of similar calves through together. It shortens the sale they will weigh up and sort the day before. Texas thinks they are leaders in the industry. :?

I have been dying to get home and see the pictures. For some reason, I get the pictures blocked while I'm at work. :???: Amazing to see all the fog! The cows sure look fine and I hope you do well at the sale! Thanks! :D

They don't sell 2500 in a little over two hours I bet-it's funny that seling with an overrnight stand is kind of a Canadian invention too. It would make for a long day on the sale staff bringing them in sale day. At our local yard they get weighed off truck ASAP-take a pencil shrink- and then go on feed and water for the presorts anyway.

Well we done real good......averaged 1.34 lb on 58 head. The biggest in the bunch were two steers that we'd held back for freezer beef....but we still have a couple of those left. One weighed 700 lbs and the other 585 both bringing $1.06 lb. Then the best price per pound was $1.625 lb and that calf only weighed 385. I'm happy...wish I had that many more to haul in. LOL

When we picked up our check at around 8:30 pm tonight...they were still sellin.

I love foggy mornins H. But it doesn't make for good pictures sometimes.

Good to hear lilly! Yeah, we always wish we had a few more likely :?

But I think that those prices are an indication of what's to come for a little while anyway. Looking a bit brighter.

One load of Alberta calves landed down this way last week - 518# strs @ $1.54.

When I lived in Lafayette I had a lake about 70 feet behind the house and the Vermilion river a block away. In the fall both sometimes contributed to heavy fog in the area.

Some mornings it was so foggy I couldn't even see the lake from the bedroom window.

Do you roll or grind the oats? How much wheat do you mix in? I thought cattle have a hard time with wheat and that there's not a lot of value in oats?

I have been feeding a bit of oats the last year or two because they were cheap but wondered how much good they did. What's you experience?
