Working calves on a fine March day.

I went with my neighbors this morning to work calves on a ranch they winter 180 head on. It was a decent day with temps in the teens to start and finished up in the 40s. We had to pair up a semi-load first off so we could get em' done before the truck showed up. Here's Gary bringing up a pair out'a the big lot.

They have a neat old barn with a newer roof on the place.

They have a fairly nice set of pens. The big lot has a series of wedge shaped alleys running off of it that all tie into the alley to the tub and chute.
We had to pair them up by where they will end up on their summer range.

There was five of us sorting pairs and roping untagged calves. Another crew was busy working calves and then loading the truck to take them out where we took em' Tuesday. Which is 2 sections of private land about 80 miles from where we were today! Confused yet? Me too!

A brockle, a baby and a barn. :D

"Ranch" with a backdrop of Broad canyon on the Oquirrh mountains. He earned his hay today. :D

I did take my turn in the tub pushing calves. The little buggers are sure cute.

Ya wanna stop snapping pictures and get back to work?

Here's a calf of a different color! They run black and red angus bulls on mostly black cows. This bunch of calves were a nice package.

Now for some action shots. They have been coming over to this place once a week or so to check stuff and tag what they could, but they couldnt get em' all. So we tagged the rest today as we paired them.

I caught some and missed some. My rope was kinda inconsistent for some reason. I think it has a hole in it and i should probably get a new one!

Ranch and Russ. Russ and Ranch. Can ya tell who's who?
DSCF0013-13.jpg

And now, a moment of prayer. :D

A young fellow who came out from the city to help. His chinks were still squeeky and his rope was too> :D His pony wasnt too sure about what to do and when but he enjoyed watching.

The partly cloudy part of the forecast. It was a nice day. Hope you all struggling with cold and snow and floods are alright.

Front of the barn and the crew at the table.

Mount Nebo framed by a gate. I've chased more than a couple elk around that mountain.

The skilled end of the crew. The unskilled guys get stuck pushing calves into the tub.

Near where we were working is an actual overland stage overnight stop. They have it fixed up all spiffy and its part of a state park. Here's a drive-by shot. We'll leave the light on for ya!

The park has a lot of history. It sits on the Pony Express trail and on the overland stage route. Plus it was part of an army post called Camp Floyd. There's a cemetary and part of the old commisary.

Headin' for the house. The hills out east of town and a silouette of a south bound rig. It's supper time!

A sunset shot using a grove of old black-willow trees as a filter.

And an un-filtered one as i head off the store hill onto a not too busy main street. A good day with 140 calves worked and two semi loads shipped. The rest will go tomorrow via truck. Now its time to wash off the burnt hair, calf manure and corral dust in a hot shower. Sorry ya'll, No cameras allowed!

Nice group of pictures, Interesting. I especially like the pictures of the barn. Barns are one of the subjects I like to photograph.
