World's biggest beaver dam discovered in northern Alberta

OTTAWA (AFP) – A Canadian ecologist has discovered the world's largest beaver dam in a remote area of northern Alberta, an animal-made structure so large it is visible from space.

Researcher Jean Thie said Wednesday he used satellite imagery and Google Earth software to locate the dam, which is about 850 metres (2,800 feet) long on the southern edge of Wood Buffalo National Park.
Average beaver dams in Canada are 10 to 100 metres long, and only rarely do they reach 500 metres.

First discovered in October 2007, the gigantic dam is located in a virtually inaccessible part of the park south of Lac Claire, about 190 kilometres (120 miles) northeast of Fort McMurray.

Construction of the dam likely started in the mid-1970s, said Thie, who made his discovery quite by accident while tracking melting permafrost in Canada's far north.

"Several generations of beavers worked on it and it's still growing," he told AFP in Ottawa.

Must be a government sponsored job. Goes on forever and never gets done. :) How deep do beavers like to go? I wonder if there are maintenance specialists doing the deep work of maintenance. :?

The original engineer must have been a Dam idiot picking the widest spot in the creek to build a Dam.

If they can build that then I am fighting a losing battle with them down here. They keep daming up a creek that goes though our place and I keep digging it out. I have burn their home out many times but a new family comes in and builds it right back with the dam dam. If our government could build things like they do it would be crazy on what they could do with sticks, grass and mud.

I try and leave them alone but my plow jockey neighbors sneak in and dig out the dams on my place. I've got a little bunch living in the bank of one dugout should be safe.

Built without the approval of the EPA, BLM, Forest Service or any gov't agency. How dare they!
The bright side is we still don't need the approval of any American Government agency to build stuff in Canada. (couldn't help myself OD/NT)

LOL Too funny people. There are some very witty posters on Ranchers.. :p

Trinity, find someone with an explosives licence and blow them up. They will come back eventually but it usually will give you a few years break.

If they are not a complete nuisance and hazard we always left them alone. They are really unique animals. We don`t have beavers here at the new place ,no running water .

some people south of us have trouble with the dams flooding them out.

A road crew member has a great job. Just a couple of sticks of dynamite and he has the whole area up in arms thinking there are war games going on.

Believe me I have thought of that many times, but there is a oil pipe line about 20 feet from the bad one. I do have one in a creek on our river bottom place that I would love to blow up. They have been given me hell since I was a kid. My dad had me dig it out every day. I sat there one night waiting for them but I fell asleep and they came in and builded part of it back.

If you don't kill every beaver in the pond first I would'nt waste my money or time blowing up the dam. The damn beavers will have it plugged up by the next day and within a week it'll be back to what it was.I've spent alot of money retrieveing 60 acres of hayland the beavers claimed. They are persistant and killing them is the only thing that stops them. After you get rid of them get rid of all the small brush, willow's and poplar that they like. I cut hay right up to the old damn on my piece but I watch the water levels all the time 1st sign of high water I'll find the new pair and kill'em.

I HATE  Beavers.
