Would the real rancher stand up, please

JF Ranch really started this with comments on Soapweed's pictures about being able to know who is a rancher by how he looks in western wear.

It might be interesting to do a study: pick the rancher out of the line-up. How many of you think you could pick one out successfully? I'm doing the devil's advocate and guessing but it might be more in the manner than the face. A weighing, a sizing up, a type of quietness but this can also be found in other occupations.

LOL jigs...now there ya go :p (Even way back when Urban Cowboy came out and I was a youngster, I always thought "how fake" the whole movie seemed) The way he talks....lol that aint how we sound in Texas, the way he walks......come on it's John Travolta....he disco dances and walks like it. I have no idea why they chose him to play that part LOL

In all honesty, I think it'd be easier to pick a real rancher out up in Soapweeds country than it would be here. For the simple fact that they all seem to put on all the gear every time they work or ride. Hat, vest or jacket, wild rag, chaps, etc.......
Down here you'd smother to death in all that gear. And if you do wear it, ya wanna shuck it as soon as ya git done, cuz it's hot. No one down here wears wild rags. More often than not if you do happen to see someone with one on, they ain't the real deal, they are playin dressup.
The biggest rancher in our area.....you'd never know he's a rancher at all. Yes he wears boots and jeans......but they aint wranglers, and he don't wear a hat. If you seen him, you'd think he was "playin dress up" so.....looks can be deceiving.

All the ranchers in Jinglebob's country wear corn company ball caps and drive track hoes lol. I'll garantee you no matter where you go -clothes don'ty tell you diddly squat about a man's outfit-I'm sure you've heard 'All Hat and No Cows'. The funniest deal I ever saw was when I took a friend of mine to Stevenson Basin to look for bulls-they run a 1,000 cows just north of me. I finally bugged him into losing the ball cap and buying a good felt hat. He piles out at their ranch wearing running shoes that do up with velcro and with his new felt hat on backwards-funny stuff.

Around here the hat of chocie is whatever is free... And than the Joke goes, here is my 220k hat that came with a free combine and header or something to that affect.. To be honest, you see a "cowboy" hat around here and more likely than not it is a salesman or a guy from one of the auctions trying to get your business.. Boots too and the jeans are whatever is on sale down at the farm store or carhart work pants....

I have yet to get a seedcorn hat but had a bunch of Dekalb Pig hats from when my dad worked for them in the 80's... Wonder where all those went.. All my free hats are equipment guys trying to drum up business or showing up in the mail after I register something.

No offence to anybody but this is how it is around here.
The last pair of cowboy boots I bought cost $500. Even though im not walking on rocks or pavement if I wore them everyday I would have them wore out in 6 months. For this reason I only wear them on holy days.
I watch town guys steer wrestling in $50 shirts and it just makes me cringe at the waste. I own one $50 shirt and it only gets worn on special occasions.
BTW I got married in work boots. No way I would wear my good riding boots in town on all that pavement.
I wish my wife could make good pants like those hutterite women can :D
I buy wrangler jeans or walmarts knock off wranglers<rustlers> because of the single inseam that doeasnt chaff like the regular double stitched inseams do when your riding.
My wife knits my socks and my grandmother knits my gloves and scarf.
I buy my jackets from UFA because they are the most bang for the buck.
My horse tack is all custom made. Cheap riggins cost more in the long run.
Being a good cowman <business man>doesnt necessarily make you a good ranch hand.
Being a good ranchhand doesnt make you necessarily a good horsehand.
Being a good horsehand doesnt mean you know anything much about cows.
People around here all respect and treat women pretty good. It just blows me away how some on here talk to women.
As far as the "quitness" comments about ranchers<whatever a rancher is sapposed to be> well that comment really made me laugh.
If I was to show up at a branding with a camera they would think I was, well it would raise eye brows to say the least:lol: .
Half the people that live within 10 miles of me dont own or want a TV. Out of these people its only one of them has the internet and I promise you she isnt talking on forums

I live in my boots..........only take em off to shower and sleep......Nothin I've ever wore feels as comfortable as they do.
Most days I wear Wranglers.....I do have a few pairs of Cruel girl jeans.....but they don't fit as well as the wranglers do. As far as shirts go...that all depends on the weather. If it's hot...I've usually got on a sleeveless shirt, or a t-shirt. If it's cold, I wear long sleeve buttin down shirts. And always a belt. Feel nekid if I don't have on my belt.

I have noticed that different areas people dress differently.Gregs choice of clothes Wranglers, cowboy boots $50 western shirts.Winter carhart coveralls. we've gone places and seen guys dressed in same outfit as greg and you just KNOW they've never seen a cow or horse outside of a petting zoo.

I wear roper chuckas"boots"...love them, when they discontinued them I bought two new pairs..greg just about had a knipchen fit...lol. They'll last me forever now.
I don't nessasarly believe clothes make the rancher though, just that most of these clothes are made to last through the work they do daily.

Does a rancher have to be a western cowboy? what about ranchers in Australia or Africa, running 2000 + cattle on the range?
We always wear t shirts, jeans if riding shorts if not, cloth hats (not 'bush hats' as Hollywood depicts) and velschoen for footwear, both walking or riding.

Who knows.. we don't really conform to the western cowboy image around here for the most part. Summer is t-shirts and jeans (Usually not wranglers) or carhart pants. Boots could be "cowboy" or could just be work boots of some sort, most folks wear just workboots.... Ball caps... Shorts happen but not too often, nothing against wearing shorts and I have been known to do some chores in July wearing shorts, generally end up regretting it though, lol.

edit becasue I couldn't type worth a lick.

Where I come from you may be looking at a rancher if his truck is older than everyone elses, he has pen and herdbook in his pocket, his jeans show some wear, he's tanned clear up from his fingertips to just past his wristwatch, his hands are allways rough strong looking, his go-to-town ballcap looks suspiciously like it might double as his feed-the-cows ballcap, and whatever form of footwear he has on has obviously been more places than just pavement. Oh.... and worry lines. Lots and lots of worry lines.

Good one, Silver!! And very true.

We had supper with some friends last night that own a little
place but they both work out. He is pretty cowboy looking,
and it's okay. He is one.

He had on a custom made hat from Kickin' Ass Hat company
in Miles City and some nice ostrich boots. A vest from Cripple
Creek. I told him how nice he looked.

He says, "I paid $375 for the hat and the boots. The Wranlers
are $16.50 seconds."

I just thought that was funny and shows how these guys think. :p

Them $16.50 Wrangler seconds.....have you ever tried any of them on......maybe it was just a bad experience for me, but the pair I tried on was like...one leg was one size and the other leg was a size smaller......make ya squeak when ya walk, it sure will

Heck you can get the real deal for $16.99......it's worth the extra .49 cents to me to not squeak when I walk.

Can just imagine what kinda noise a feller would make if'n he was to get himself a pair of them odd fittin britches. :D

Juan, I kind of agree with you on the Wranglers. I have a couple pair but rarely wear them.. The material is not good compared to some other jeans I have worn.. If I want ones seamed the way Wranglers are I would probably pony up the extra cash and get Cinch jeans.. The one pair I have has held up a lot better than the wranglers.. But to be honest, I am heck on pants, between snagging them on barbwire or getting grease and oil on them or catching them on something I just beat the crap out of them.

I was at a family reunion a few years ago and had a ball cap on.. Was talking to some of the wife's cousins and took the hat off to get some sweet off my forehead and they saw how nasty the inside and outside of that hat really was... I've been known to throw a hat or two in disgust with someone or an animal and not come back and pick it up for a few days or weeks... Hat will sometimes find its way back to my head as long as no one made a deposit in it.

Well here's what the well dressed Saskatchewan cowboy is wearing this afternoon. He's supposed to be going out to check cows but is packing that rope in case he catches a yote in the open-nothing like having confidance in your roping lol. P.S. Notice how bright and sunny it is up here at 4'30 P'M the days are really stretching out huh.
