We got busy this afternoon and make a pot of chili. I came in from working with the heifers and dad poured another can of V-8 juice in it and walaha. The spoon stands.!! For those who cook, and for those who like to eat, Do you think it is thick enough???

We normally make that big of pot and freeze some. Tommorow we have my uncle, and his wife, and my other aunt coming for dinner. This seemed like the right time to make a big pot.

Sundancer, we won't eat the whole thing in one sitting or we would all have to sit upwind of each other

Hanta Yo, we usually put oyster crackers in it. We aren't big on tortillas, but dad loves cornbread, but I don't know how to make it.

It should be enough to feed 7 seven people.

For those who make chili, do you add cinnamon to it?? Just curious.

We like ours with cornbread or a fried tortilla, cover the tortilla with chili, top with salsa and sour cream...mmm good.

Cornbread is really easy to make,I'm sure you can easily find it in a cook book or an online recipe site.....my fav one www.allrecipes.com

MN Farm Girl,

It'll probably be thicker going down than it will be coming out. (Sorry, that was kinda gross  )

I always get a kick out of "chili" recipes from all over the country. They ain't ever the same as what we call chili down here in Texas.
That does look like it would be good, but looks more like a soup, I see corn in there LOL and beans........

Let us know how the cornbread turns out. (Good ole iron skillet is the best thing to cook cornbread in, put a lil bacon grease in there before ya put the batter in) makes it slide right outta there when its done. I have one special iron skillet, it's used for nothin but makin cornbread, ever one in the house knows not to use it for ANYTHING else!!!

I use that website too...when I actually have to come up with something to cook besides hotdogs..lol

So Lilly, what is Texan chili? We're like Mrs. Greg and put tortilla chips and sour cream and cheddar cheese in ours...no corn though, I don't care for corn. Luv cornbread, but hardly have the stuff to make it ever on hand. Does sound good though.

Ground Beef
Chili Powder
(some other stuff) gotta be spicy and hot.
Home canned maters

Top secret recipe LOL

We do Frito pie with ours sometime....chili, fritos, and cheese
or with crackers,
Or with corn tortilla's fried, and layered with chili cheese salsa. (mom called em lazy enchiladas)
A pot of chili round here never goes to waste, there's always somethin you can do with it besides just usin a bowl. After all the above has been had, we do chili dogs with what's left over. Can pert near feed my family 4 or 5 times on a good size pot of chili.

Oh I know about them "special cast iron pans"....my mother in law clued me in big time when I first met her...she is very picky about what goes in what pan and how to clean em...I grew up in the tephlon (sp?) era...sad but true.

Your chili Lilly is like mine,,,guess it's all up to the fixins that go with it that makes every chili unique. I have put beer in the chili once in awhile if I had it. Makes the day go better somehow..lol

Guess I got my "cast iron skillet schoolin" from my grandma and my mama. Both said never EVER use dish soap to wash the skillet. Just hot water!!!! Then put it back on the stove with the burner on and let it dry.

Biggest problem I had was gettin a brand new "shiny" cast iron skillet when we got married. I could NOT get it seasoned right. I've since learned how, but man oh man I hated that skillet, and couldn't figure out what was wrong with it for a long time. LOL Nothin was wrong with it, it was me not doin it right. I have a whole bunch of them tephlon coated pans, I use em, and like em just fine. But there's just some thangs ya gotta cook in a iron skillet for it to taste right.

Jersey, that isn't corn, that's part of the 4 onions that went in. Dad hates it if we put corn in ours soups or stews. Not sure why though??

When y'all are saying "cornbread", would that be the same as what I call "johnny cake"?

I Cup cornmeal, one cup flour, 4tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, 2T. brown sugar (optional, I don't), mix dry ingredients. Mix - 2 beaten eggs, 1/4 cup (olive) oil or melted shortening, 1 c. milk, mix into dry ingredients until smooth, pour into greased pan. sprinkle brown sugar on top (if you want to glaze it), bake for 20 [email protected] 400 in preheated oven.

serve hot with maple syrup and milk on top . . .nothing like it on a cold winter day . . .

Yup, my Grandma came from Northern New York State, but I ain't no damn Yankee!

My wife is the same as Lilly except she doesn't use much teflon. She says the cast iron is almost as nonstick as the teflon. She won't wash hers either Lilly. She'll rinse them and put them on the burner or in the oven to dry. Hers are black as night.

olive oil in cornbread/johnny cakes?????????????

Never heard of such!

There, I put the whole recipe up the way I like to do it. Johnny cake is the only thing I bake. I like it a bit on the unbaked side and pour maple syrup and coffee over it. Kinda has the opposite effect of Jiggsy's (or whoever put it up on another thread) diet soup!
