The following statement was issued by USDA and the National 4-H office in response to concerns voiced over a presentation by the Humane Society of the United States at the National 4-H Conference. HSUS distributed materials to 4-H members containing anti animal agriculture messages.

Humane Society Workshop

4-H National Headquarters has been listening to the concerns many of you have shared over the past few days about a workshop that was presented by the Humane Society of the United States at the 2010 National 4-H Conference.
The National 4-H Conference is a working conference for youth. The workshops presented are designed to provide information on current trends and issues, determine community needs, build partnerships, create innovative programs, work with diverse groups, and communicate impact – in this case, within the context of the 2010 theme of citizenship. While the remarks of the HSUS representatives were entirely their own, and should not be taken as approved or sanctioned by USDA, we believe the HSUS workshop did offer the opportunity to bring greater awareness to the 4-H participants of differing opinions and positions that people factor when making choices about how food and fiber are produced in the United States. 4-H National Headquarters has not entered into any partnership with HSUS and there are no discussions to do so.
At its heart, 4-H is built around the local community and depends on this community of volunteers and supporters to work alongside our youth members as they grow into adulthood. We appreciate your continued support, and we look forward to working with our supporters to ensure 4-H remains one of our nation’s premier youth development organizations.
