‘Cop Killer’ Manhunt Goes Nationwide

The manhunt for a “cop killer” was expanded today to a nationwide dragnet to find the suspected bank robber who fatally shot a Mississippi police officer two days before Christmas, according to the FBI.

Tupelo Police Department officer Gale Stauffer and another officer were hit by gunfire Monday when they confronted suspected bank robbers during their getaway in the city.

As the officers approached suspects in a vehicle, which was stuck in traffic at a railroad crossing, at least one of the suspects opened fire at close range, according to an account posted online at the Officer Down Memorial Page.

The suspects fled, leaving Stauffer fatally shot and another officer critically wounded.

Stauffer “has made the ultimate sacrifice for his community,” Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton said, urging the public to help “so that the criminal or criminals responsible for this horrendous act can be brought to justice.”

After reviewing bank surveillance video from the robbery of a BancorpSouth bank in Tupelo, authorities are looking for a thin, possibly African-American man with light complexion, standing between 5-feet-9 and 6-feet tall, according to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

The suspect seen in the surveillance video was wearing khaki or cargo-style pants, white Converse tennis shoes, a long-sleeved jacket and a blue ski mask, the state public safety department said. A charcoal-colored, medium-sized sedan might have been used as a getaway car.

As part of the investigation, authorities also released a photo (shown below) of a “person of interest” standing in what appears to be a convenience store minutes before the robbery at the bank. Police did not discuss any possible connection to the bank shooting.

More than 100 agents, officers, deputies and marshals worked through Christmas to track down the suspects, an FBI official said.

The FBI, BancorpSouth and others are offering more than $152,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI’s tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).

Stauffer was a combat veteran of the Louisiana Army National Guard, and he had served with the Tupelo Police Department for eight years, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

He was married with two young children, the memorial page said.

when you see articles like this you can understand the stress an officer feels as he approaches a car with his hand on his holstered gun..

and watchinga bunch of smug brattie you-tube shots of people just being smart @$$es in most cases does not help,..

with that said,.. many good officers are tainted by the few mediocre and bad officers..

most just need training on how to de-escalate a situation.. an the rest should find a different line of work..

I pray they get the scum that shot this man,.. and mostly pray for the officers' family.. it isn't easy walking towards danger...

Yep, I really think LEO's should be required a furlough from the normal traffic stop and be subjected to retraing. I am sorry but these officers need to deal with things presented them. Sometimes after doing this day in and day out, they need to get brought back to reality. Because if you notice after they do this for a length of time many consider all stop dealing with criminals. They need to realize it might be their daughter , dad or mother.

I deal with LEO quite a bit in many levels. I respect them greatly. That being said they and I know there are many out there tainting the name of LEO's. Many are afraid to speak up. If they can't deal with things presented them on the street they need to go. And the good ones rewarded.

Some of these stops are wise azzes but if they can't handle a wise azz they need to do something different whether its to step away from the job or get more training. Many of the LEOs I know enjoy the wise azzes, its a chance to learn.

Two North Carolina parents are in shock after local police shot and killed their 18-year-old son in their own home, while they watched helplessly.

The family called police because they were worried about their son, Keith Vidal, who is schizophrenic and suffers from depression, according to local news. Vidal, armed with a small screwdriver, was apparently having a psychotic episode. Mark Wilsey, Vidal’s father, called the authorities to help deal with the situation.

An officer from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and another from the Boiling Spring Lakes police department showed up to the house soon after. Eventually, a third officer from the Southport police department entered the home as well, and ordered the use of tasers to subdue Vidal. According to Wilsey, Vidal was pinned on the ground by two of the officers when a third said, “we don’t have time for this,” and shot Vidal, killing him.

Vidal had just turned 18, and weighed a mere 90 pounds. He couldn’t have hurt anyone with the screwdriver, and had no history of violence according to family and friends.

“There was no reason to shoot this kid,” said Wilsey in a statement. “They killed my son in cold blood. We called for help and they killed my son.” (RELATED: TheDC’s Dirty Dozen: 12 SHOCKING police abuse stories of 2013)

After her son was killed, Vidal’s mother suffered a mental breakdown and was treated by medical staff.

The New Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office told The Daily Caller that no statement has been released yet, but the district attorney and state investigators are looking into the shooting.
