    Heritability of phenotype.

Most feet and leg traits are around fifteen percent heritable. Udder traits are about fifteen to twenty percent. Stature is in the forties. This is why I've never been a fan of corrective matings. At fifteen percent heritability, you could make the same corrective mating five times and never see...

    Was 70° yesterday

It was mid sixties with just a little breeze Thursday until about three o'clock. By four o'clock it was twenty four degrees with freezing rain and twenty mph wind. I had been in and out of my truck all day but had to let it thaw out just to drive home. Forecast says single digits early next...

    Calving in the cold

I had a couple of surprises last year. One of them was that we got down to -1 and the other was that three cows that I'd bought as pairs had turned out to be 3in1's and calved in it. They all did just fine. Little bitty calves too. They had a little patch of trees for shelter but that's it.

Our first trip to AZ desert

Looks like fun! I spent a bunch of time in Nevada as a kid. If you knew where to look you could find the indian camps preserved as if they had been there the week before. It always amazed me how well the desert preserves history.

COLD WEATHER INCIDENT, by Steve Moreland, December 29, 2017

Good on you, George. It might take her years to figure out that you helped her but you most certainly did. I don't drink enough to get myself in trouble anymore but my buddies and I used to say that if God pities fools and drunks we were doubly blessed...

    Not Enough Bears?

California always pulled crap like that. They made it illegal to kill mountain lions except by depredation permit, which required that you identify an individual lion causing problems. Imagine everyone surprise when the deer herd went into a steep decline and lions started showing up on the...

What a differance a cow makes!

I think I've owned a few of her relatives. The one that sticks out in my mind is the old slick cow that I managed to get into the corrals with a few of mine. She was probably ten years old and had never been in the corrals and was a leftover from the guy I bought the place from three years...

    Beginner Interested In cattle

I would look at buying older bred cows about a month from now. Calve them out and haul everything back to the sale in the fall. Just don't fall in love with any of them and think you need to keep them. That won't work in all markets but bred cows are cheap enough right now you should be able to...

    More Bovine Tuberculosis

No, they aren't. When I worked on the dairies in CA we had a TB outbreak. Every cow had to test and someone got the idea that they needed to test all of the employees as well to make sure they weren't getting it from the cows. That died quickly when they figured out that more of the employees...

    The Challenge of Cow Size

I would like to see more RFI data on smaller cattle. It's out there on the more "progressive" angus sires and I can fairly easily make a 1,400lb cow that eats like an 1,300 pound cow using that information. The problem is that I want to make a 1,100lb cow that eats like a 900lb cow and everyone...

    Looking Like Winter Today

I don't think the weather itself knows what comes next here. In the last three days we've went from eighty seven to twenty one and were back into the high sixties today. I guess my vaccination program is working as my weaned calves are taking it in stride.

Pretty hard to beat, isn't it? I used to sing quite a bit but don't much anymore. My wife and kids will will still stop and listen when that one pops into my head.

Thank you, Lucky_P! Glad to see you over here.

    Kind of weird

It think it depends on how you use it. My boy is thirteen and currently making plans to build his own airplane. He spends quite a bit of time looking at his phone but it's brain candy to him and he avoids most of the mundane crud. My wife and I(mostly her) spent a couple of months directing hay...

    Sweet clover questions

That doesn't sound like fun Saddleup. I think I might stick with other clovers in the main pastures and just use the sweet clover in the smaller pastures where I can work around it/get rid of it if it is causing problems. Thank you both for your input.

    “the potential to be amazing,”

Good news indeed. Even if all they get done is putting disaster coverage back on the table I'll be happy, happier at least. I don't go to doctors unless I need something sewn back on(literally) but under Oh F-me care I'm forced to pay the same as people that go every time they get the sniffles.

    He thinks he's hid

I saw one like that this morning. For once I'm glad my son wasn't with me as he'd still be out there looking for him. I like venison but am just as happy to see them walk away.

    Sweet clover questions

Thank you, faster horses. I was aware of that problem but hadn't thought about it in a looong time. I doubt it will be a big problem as it rains enough here that my grass gets pretty washy and it won't be a pure stand but it is something I need to keep in mind.
