RANCH TRAVEL DURING THE 1960’s by Steve Moreland, June 11, 2017

We had a 57 GMC pickup, ordered a add on heater for it from Montgomery wards. Old timers would put a candle on the dash to keep frost off the windshield.

    Hard morning

Heeler Had been just a touch off the past 3 weeks, still working, still her contrary self, bark at the windshield wipers, knew when she heard sorry a** hussy, something was not where it was supposed to be. Unloaded at the barn, and started bringing in calves, would leave one just to look at...

Hair care products like the old pomades, greasy as all get out and your hands will soak it up. In 5 min or so, you don't know it's there.

    Boots

Have worn lace up red wings for 40 plus years, don't do over shoes, much to better 1/2 dismay, wear them every day, mud snow heat, grease, diesel, the works. Take good care of them, they last a year, treat them horribly, they last a year. Getting older, feet don't hurt at night, so I'm doing ok.

    Scurs

If they are scurs, just cut them off with a sharp knife, you can take a stitch or 2nd you need a clean look. Scurs will probably get horns from a horned cow, scurs from a polled cow with a horned in her pedigree. Fought the scurs when polled Herefords had to be polled.

    Wide Swathing

Our haying changes from year to year if not week to week, rain every week. Then no rain for 4 months then no rain at all. One cutting can be baled. In 3days and the next takes 10 days. A windrow that fits the baler and leave it alone seems to work time after time. Best thing I found for wet...

    Wide Swathing

I started cutting hay with a 7 ft sickle mower with a wooden pitman over 50 years ago. The cutting part wasn't the problem, the raking was, odd shaped fields, 9 corners and everyone of them sharp. You left as much rayon the ground as I put in a cow, the only thing that saved it was turning...

    Well Water Woes

The old cable rigs had a baler, 20 ft piece of pipe with a plug in the bottom, run it down the hole it fills from. The bottom up. The plug will let a lot of junk in to be hauled to the top. Just need a rig with a sand line that can cycle fairly quick. The banging around in the hole don't hurt any.

desperately need to find additional ranch income

I worked on a ranch, we sold through superior, was a better deal than the sale barn, it helps a little, if you have grass taking in heifers to calve isn't a bD deal either. Devolping heifers might be a option, no bulls, just care and watch, if you a I ship the out bred.

    Supreme court

Read this morning that the supreme court is taking a case over the patent on genetic seeds and if farmers could be prohibited from planting them. First I had read anything, suit is over roundup tolerant seeds, could filter down to all seeds. Any one else read anything about it?
