    Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis

I have attributed one outbreak of pinkeye to ear tags before. The lesions were consistently on the side with the tag. The tags were large with long necks. Don't remember the brand of tag right off. They could reach the eye easily when the ear was pulled down. Of course, my diagnosis was...

    Bale grazing

Sorry that I can't provide much insight to bale grazing. I've wanted to try it for years, but "upper management" if you will hasn't allowed it. He thinks it would be a wreck. I say we will never know until we try! But I can help with the corn situation. The trick to grazing corn stalks with...

    How to become a cowboy?

I almost had a similar experience on Saturday as well. If I haven't mentioned before, I am a veterinarian. I was preg checking cows on Saturday and as things often are, we were short on help, so I was helping load cows into the alleyway up to the chute. Well this one cow(lets just say she...

    Beef Check-Off Question

One reason some of us don't regularly see checkoff dollars in action locally may be due to how they are distributed. The way I understand it is check off "rich" states like Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, etc. send check off dollars to "poor" states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, etc...

    How many head per acre?

Here we run 10 acres/pair through the grazing season, but we head to corn stalks over the winter and spring. Continuous grazing would require decreasing our stocking density significantly.

Oklahoma rancher dragged to death by calving cow

This happened to a neighbor several years ago. He went to pull the calf and put a piece of baling twine around the calves legs. He then took a good wrap around his wrists to pull. The best everyone could figure is the cow got up at some point and took off. His family found him the next...

    Cow/calf vs. Stocker Operation?

Just curious, what kind of stocking rate are you looking at for your pasture in north Texas?

Do most ranchers still brand their cattle or only use ear tags?

Brand 'em! It is the only easily read permanent identification method for livestock. Ear tags will fall out and like previously mention, are awfully easy to remove.

Ideas on long term handover of operation

How do you plan to pay for your living expenses? It has to come from somewhere. As far as transfer, you could negotiate a percentage of the calf crop (as payment for management and labor) that you keep. From these calves you choose replacement animals. Every year you could recalculate what...
