I have a lot less fence crawlers on my HT smoothwire fences than on my barbed.. my cows don't care at all about the barbs, extra scratching power is good apparently. The HT on the other hand is so darned tight it just feel solid, they don't put their heads through, and all the staples stay in...

The rest of my year didn't go a whole lot better.. Lost another cow in the summer to what I'm chalking up to be Lyme disease... Oh I got better than 100% calf crop at the expense of cows... Hopefully I've had my share this for a while.

That one was certainly determined to die.. unfortunate.. I lost 1 calf in the last 6 years, C section that took FOREVER for the vet to get here.. timely arrival would have certainly been a different outcome.. Lost a cow 6 weeks ago.. had to be my best cow of course.. still pizzed about it.

For fighting, I found shorthorns were terrible... ALWAYS fights breaking out over nothing.. YOU ATE THE LEAF I WANTED!.. The Gelbvieh seem to fight less, they don't care if they get pushed around, they'll just stand there and take it, keeping their head in the feed bunk

I had the opposite problem... the Angus influence made them terribly hard on fences, the Gelbvieh behave themselves... Same experience with Herfs though.
