    Mesquite Spot Spraying

Many moons ago we used a sprayer that used a 5horse Briggs and a gear reduction and small piston pump. Electric solenoid valves to switch from mounted spray boom to hand wand. We sprayed 2 45 T, (aka agent orange) not available today. Only had fair efficacy- mesquite is tough. I’d suggest...

THOUGHTS ABOUT A BORDER WALL, by Steve Moreland, January 9, 2019

Very well developed analogies making the conclusion inescapable. I’d add, the Soros caravan smashed right through the light fence to go from Guatemala into Mexico, but had no such luck when they tried to bum rush into a section of wall on the US border. Unfortunately we have many open border...

    Interesting Read

Used to hear grow back on alfalfa was faster with sickle mower over a disc mower. So far as I can tell, there isn’t a grow back difference. Now I hear you have to remove and sharpen blades on a disc mower every day. Can that be so?

    Pretty quiet

Been very aggressive pull forward - I was thinking/hoping the pulled forward cattle would remove weight from the supply. At this point, probably time to hide and watch - I’m getting more and more concerned. If heat doesn’t rescue the industry, this fall - well I’m not gonna say it.

    Calving in the cold

Ya scout, on heifers, +20F you probably better get busy. Letting the momma do it all probably makes a better cowherd in the long run, but the banker might rather you picked up wet calves and dried them up and warmed them up and gave them a shot of collustrum. A lot of cows get a little help to...

it using the oven to help warm the house

The title of this thread is straight up Americana. Our version: the house in which I began life was...spartan. Ok, perhaps ranchy. Ok, a half dozen government agencies would put parents in jail if a glass of water would freeze on the night stand over night. But we had real running water and no...

    It was a good day

Great discussion about availability of mineral sources - fine line between economy and effectiveness. I might correct that FH can't "promote what they sell" because they sell both chelates and nonchelates. Lots of wisdom both ways - don't overspend vs better ingredients = better performance.

    Why do you buy cake?

When I feel like cows are lazy and waiting for handouts, I consider they need more protein to drive them to roughage

You might want to sit out the next couple dances and just work for/with a neighbor that has some scars. That whole buy low sell high thing - we're overbuilding the herd because of unnaturally cheap corn. A little more herd expansion and a hiccup in corn production, and you'll see plenty cheap cows.

    King Pin Adapter

Never seen one, but it looks cool. Might have to move the plate on the semi back so the trailer doesn't rub.

    Why do you buy cake?

The original question about "why cake?" It's to compensate for inadequate protein levels in a high roughage diet. If you're feeding 14% tame hay, of course you wouldn't cake. Cows getting 30# dm of 8% grass hay are going to need some protein. 5# of 20% alfalfa will get you almost to 10% cp -...
