    Oats for hay?

If you think you have enough growing time left. Put some roundup on it and plant sorgum in it ASAP. Will make good grazing if not enough height for hay. Oats regrowth has nitrates a lot of the time, but then again so does sorgum if it gets stressed. We just did the same thing with triticale...

For a neighbor, question on harvesting corn

Yes, they can either cut it and bale it or just go out and rake it. The raked is better feed than if they cut it as the stalks are pretty big and they will sort a lot of them out and leave in bunk or on the ground, where they will eat most of the leaves and husks. Especially if they don't...

    Videos of Chopping corn

Yes, this is the # of seeds planted per acre. Some plant 21,000 here, but they are on a little heavier soil. We NORMALLY don't get the rain in July and August and the soil is REALLY sandy and hardly any top soil. I think the county average for ton/acre is like 8, and this crop gave us 14.5...

We hire 100% of the farming done. They put a starter fert on (not sure what it is) and then 150 lbs Nitrogen. The population was 18,500 kernels/acre.

This is a good way to founder a set of sound cows.

For a neighbor, question on harvesting corn

Hire someone to combine it and then either graze the stalks if they can. If they can't, then go out there with a rake and rake all the leaves and bale it. It makes great bedding and feed. Especially good feed if you grind it and mix it with something else. Corn is pretty valuable in MT as...

    Selling hay

Last year we purchased about 1500 bales and all of the hay we put 1/2 down when we spoke for it. That way they wouldn't sell it out from under us, and they felt better having that much before any hay left his place.

    willow creek forage winter wheat

We are thinking about planting something like this, this fall. Something we can take off early and plant a sorgum or millet as soon as we take it off in the spring if the moisture is decent. I am not sure, but I think this is the winter wheat that Felton Angus planted on their irrigated ground...

    Videos of chopping our oats

This year isn't typical. We can usually get a decent crop of feed here, but this year is crazy. Our typical moisture for the year is 16 inches and these fields have so far gotten somewhere around 14 inches already without counting the spring snow fall. This is typically great cow/pasture...

    Videos of chopping our oats

For this crop it took 3 trucks. They hauled about 1 1/2 miles one way and the crop did 5 ton to the acre. That is a good crop for our area, but not a great yielding crop. But we are happy with it as it might be the best quality we have ever put up.(heavy grain in it) We cut it down right in...

    Crop and chopping photos

What we did was take a crop off of a poor producing field of grass/alfalfa first (Mid/late June), sprayed it to kill it out, and then planted it back right away. The only other expense we have in it is the fertilizer we put on the hay field in May. Pretty cheap crop if it rains. It takes a...

    Baling Failed corn?

You are right, but sometimes you don't have to own the equipment to get it done. We hire all of our chopping done. Our guy is good and comes when he says he will. So far this summer we chopped 140 acres of oats. The bill came to $36.90/acre or $8.61/ton of oatlage. We cut it ourselves, but...

    Hay Ad

On the same note, I believe most people are honest and won't try to take advantage of us. This guy I was talking about thought it was crazy and never did what was recommended to him. We also purchased some hay from an old boy the other day in ND. He called me out of the blue and below is...
