Best Electric Fence Charger - GOT ONE. Another question about ground rods...

We sell Speedrite (same as Stayfix), but Gallagher are also a good fencer. The biggest issue is Joules of output and grounding. You can run a lot of fence on a solar setup as long as you have enough panel. For summer in our country you need at least 10W per Joule. In winter, 20 is better. You...

    Garlic to control flies?

    Garlic to control flies?

Our local college is doing a research project on garlic for fly control. Will try to post results once I see them.

Just a haying between the rains

It is nice to hear some folks are making out OK with feed. Did an extended tour yesterday (south of halkirk, down to Oyen and home). It is really patchy. 2 miles of difference could makes 10x difference in yields. We got a letter from our AFSC moisture insurance that said we don't get a...

    alfalfa

Interesting. We use lots of alfalfa, with some tame pastures 75%+Alfalfa. We usually seed with a Case IH 6200 press drill on 6" centres and put it in 1/4" deep. Depending on our target we usually try to hit about 5# per acre seeding rate. Rain makes it grow, and patience makes it rain...

    Fences

We use a lot of electric fence here. I prefer it to barb wire as we find the maintenance less and the installation cost much lower. single wire paddock seperations and hot/ground/hot three wire for perimeter fence. With modern fencers, lots of ground rods, remote control fault finders, etc...

    Sisal twine

Silver, we have long been priced out of using Sisal, but this fall I ran across a product called Clearfield twine, which is supposed to be a plastic twine that biodegrades in about a year. I am not 100% convinced on a pallet of the stuff yet, but might give it a try this summer. Look up...

    Grazing legume forage

We are not in BC and I think rainfall levels might affect things a bit. We often graze 70%+ Alfalfa fields and never worry about bloat at all. That includes cows, calves, bulls, grass cattle, etc. Maybe we are just too dumb to worry about it. I think we may have lost a cow to bloat once in...

    fence charger's

Stayfix and Speedrite are the same thing, both made by Trutest. I send my repairs to my wholesaler in SK who fixes them up for me.

I got my first one from Lamb Acres and now I buy them from myself. PM me if you want more info. :D

    fence charger's

We have used Gallagher in the past, and even parmak. We switched to Speedrite (Stafix) a few years ago and liked them so much I have become a dealer. They sell all the way up to a 220V plug in fencer and very good battery stuff. I have used the Patriots (same maker) and they are a bit less of...

    GPS and fencing

We use Google Earth for full on mapping. The "pro" version is now free so it will calculate acreages, etc. Once you click a GPS coordinate you can add it to your phone or GPS to find the spot in real life. I map sick cows, dead animals, range monitoring sites, water developments, fences, etc...

    Fencing costs

I can't afford UFA wire. Same brand is $30 more a roll than Co-op for High tensile. We don't use much barb anymore, but like the 2 strand heavy stuff from Tree Island as well.

    Fencing costs

I was stunned yesterday... We had quite a bit of fencing to do this year and next with some replacement due to snow plough damage, some due to age and some due to needing electricity instead of barbs. High tensile wire is $115 a roll at UFA, but went on sale at Peavey Mart and Coop for $100...

    Fences

Stand in the middle of the fence facing your neighbour's property. The stuff to your right is your responsibility, the stuff to the left is theirs. If your cows keep getting out, the whole thing is your problem...

    Alfalfa Lease

We had a similar situation several years ago, but it was new grass (seeded the year before) on a place we had rented for many years. Different rules here, but FWIW I would get my stacked hay out of there and walk away. If the new tenant is that way, perhaps the landlord will be begging you back...

    Pasture rent

FWIW - around here you probably start at $1. For my money you are better to rent by the acre. We have some long term agreements set up this way on places that used to rent by $/cow/day. We set it up initially that we paid the same $ amount, but it was per acre. That way everyone knows they...

    Alfalfla with grass....

Fairway is a diploid variety and Kirk is a tetraploid. The diploids tend to be lower growing and have a greater tendency to going wolfy. The Desert variety you refer to could be just the tetroids (like Kirk) as the 2 types are Agropyron cristatum and desertorum. Just looking and it says that...
