    Hay prices.

I sold all of mine in april for $110 per ton no rejects put up the very best i can ( which the way things have gone first cutting is a good thing). Feeder hay around here is running anywhere from a $100 to $120 and most guys are selling little bales of horse hay around $130 per ton.

    Fence Chargers

I use a gallagher charger hooked to a deep cycle marine battery which in turn is hooked to a solar panel. works pretty good and even the deer respect it a little bit.

    Second cut Alfalfa

If it is blooming about 50% you can cut it without much chance of winterkill otherwise let it get a hard frost(26 degrees for five hours will shut it down). Then bale it and sale to the nearest dairy and replace it with twice as much so called feeder hay!

    Best methods of pasture ropin'

: Coiling is rebuilding my rope after missing several times. :D I use 45' of 5/16ths medium nylon with a metal hondo. Brand doesn't matter much if it feels good in my hands, I will use it... except for King ropes. The last one I bought got a terrible kink in it so I finally used it to hang a...

    Hay grinding

Yep Gcreekrch, have always lived by the code that no matter what you always take care of the livestock before you take care of yourself. Hard to install those beliefs into someone who just doesn't care.

    forage kochia ( kochia prostrata)

I have been looking for a type of grass or other type of plant that would withstand the heat and wind and improve grazing conditions later through the summer. Here my grass is usually shot by mid July and the cows really hit the native grass hard. Anyway I ran across an article on forage kochia...

When do you cut new seeding alfalfa-oat hay

These oats are all under irrigation and planted as a cover crop for alfalfa so there is a lot of alfalfa compared to the oats. Just a thought, would that be like blending straight oat hay with alfalfa as you feed it. this variety that I plant is called Ajays and are a dwarf variety that usually...

When do you cut new seeding alfalfa-oat hay

I have always cut new seeding alfalfa- oats when the oats start to turn and there are a few blooms in the alfalfa plants. I have not had any problems with nitrates doing this so far. A neighbor whom I offered to buy his new seeding hay from took a test sample of forty plants to the local county...

    hay supply and prices

I think there will always be a market for good hay but freight and the price of raising it is going to take its toll. I'm not sure how much profit there is going to be in it unless you have a local market. I am planting another 400 acres down and I am looking for another outlet. One of the...

    Price of pairs

WB I think I've got close to 6 inches of rain in the last month. I got close to an inch and a half the night of the sixth. So much for high desert climate. I finally managed to bale some of the lighter stuff, it was pretty borderline wet and real ugly. Think I'll go fishing with sw. Jigs, I...

    Price of pairs

Thanks Faster Horses, I'm glad your hay went up good. Sometimes the rain just doesn't seem to come at the right time. I can't really afford to lose the income as my bankers teeth are getting really sharp but instead of just giving up I want to maybe try a different approach. I know that in...
