    Clarence-more shelterbelt-and the rest of you-thanks!

that's what i'm concerned about-varmints. would one of those mean-a@@ed donkeys scare away a skunk??!! or just turn into an egg-sucker?!! i'm gonna put off the baby girl (almost 13 ) as long as i can on the chicken issue..... here's good one: my sister, who lives just outside a major...

    Clarence-more shelterbelt-and the rest of you-thanks!

one of my dilemmas (sp?) is how much of the deadwood to remove. in one of my initial posts, i noted that on eof the reasons i was asking these questions was in an attempt to renovate an old shelterbelt, without destroying the habitat for wildlife (after all, the mutts have to have some fun...

    restoring old shelter belts--SH??....

brad s-- i dug out my tree id book, will attempt to use it (perhaps this weekend), plus email my trusty ext agents this week. i know 2 things for sure about the shelterbelt: 1) has too many mulberrys in the fringes, and 2) i need to id the canopy trees. then maybe get the goats in there to clear...

shelter belt help-come on you guys/girls

you guys are just TOO funny!! i haven't had a chance since sunday to check this, but i would think, mike and ALA, that the kudzu would keep your fences up; and all the rest of you jokers, well, if you'all lived on the great hill country of NE nebraska, or you all in canada, we KNOW what...

    restoring old shelter belts--SH??....

FH, i bet that poor horse thought your guy wanted him to rope a skunk-something no self-respecting cowhorse would do. wish i could've been there... (i love those emoticons!) anyway, there is a way to really reduce the smell of a buck goat, but we didn't have enough does to make a buck...

    restoring old shelter belts--SH??....

i have to tell you that the best fence for goats that i ever found (and i used to breed dairy goats back home when i was "young"), is electric fence, 3 to 4 strands. they don't climb it (!), and if you can break the kids to it when it's wet out (good connection, ya know!), they'll never really...

shelter belt help-come on you guys/girls

i'll have to get a tree book and ID what i have in there--there's not the first evergreen, the oldest (biggest) trees are 50' tall at least, not dead, but the undergrowth is what is worrying me the most--see-you all are already helping me define the problem. how does this RMJ take partial...

shelter belt help-come on you guys/girls

well, geez you guys! if i let the BLM/volunteer FD have at it, i wonder if my property insurance covers it? free firewood: i'd have no shelterbelt at all (and this one is on the north side), so forget that. i'm thinking i like oldtimers idea of goats to clean it up (and make MONEY!!)--i'm no...

    restoring old shelter belts--SH??....

so, i guess i'll get a couple of goats (BTW--the goat-meat market is supposed to be under-supplied for the next 20 yrs-yes,twenty-in the US of A,ask agman if you don't believe me), clear that old shelterbelt out and make a ton of money. it's on a good enough slope that i doubt i'll miss...

    restoring old shelter belts--SH??....

oldtimer, been thinking about getting some goats anyway, but should i chainsaw/burn dead stuff? and will the goats eat the small but good stuff ? (bet they will...!) and should i even worry about it at this stage? remember, we're talking 50 yards wide by 200 long. i hate decisions sometimes :!:

shelter belt help-come on you guys/girls

rancher, you're one of a kind (!), but if you saw this shelterbelt, you would FORGET the mowing nonsense--it would take a bulldozer!! i'm just rying to figure out what to save, what to pull out and burn and what to coddle....what's good to save, what to "euthanize"?

    restoring old shelter belts--SH??....

here's the quandry: this is an older shelter belt (trees 50' high), i want to maintain some wildlife habitat, encourage mushroom growth with downed trees, yet keep and encourage new (good) growth. should i just call my extension agent? or save parts and renew parts? you guys have the answers...

    restoring old shelter belts--SH??....

ok people, i'm a "long-time listener, first-time caller". i have an old shelterbelt, need some ideas as to what to take out, what to leave in.. i do want to maintain wildlife habitat (which is why i've simply let it go "natural" for the last 5 yrs), but it's getting too trashy- i think. if it...
