Did anyone notice the ad at the top of the page?

Mine is for the Angus Report and the Kansas City steak company. Sounds pretty good.

    Cattleyard that sits empty...

FH, I'd say if they can hedge a profit in them then go ahead and buy them. If not sell the corn and buy puts. If corn should increase a little then they would gain. If not they only lost their futures money and they can sit in front of the fireplace in January and take a nap. Sometimes it is...

    Cattleyard that sits empty...

I wouldn't touch it. In any market whether it be cattle, grain or the stock market you can tell when it is reaching the top when lots of folks who have limited experience in the field want to spend big bucks to get into it. Many times they will lose their shirt. You admit you lack experience...

    Can Am Side by sides

I have a gator 825i with a bench seat and it will run 45 mph with a 50 horse gas engine. I've never been that fast but it will really go, much faster than my old gator 6 wheel. I got the deluxe cab but didn't get the glass doors as I thought I could find some canvas or plastic doors similar to...

    JD 7410 question

I have a 6000 series tractor and there are two wires that hang down underneath the tractor that plug into each other. Sometimes weeds or brush will pull them apart and unplug them. When that happens the tractor won't move until you plug them back in again. Then the reverser works fine.

Spring update #4 or whatever season we have

Really great looking cattle and those little guys are a husky bunch, You should be real proud of those cattle. They are so slick and shiny, I assume they lose their winter hair a little later. Mine are looking pretty ragged right now but in a while they will lose that winter hair and really...

    Landscape Conservation Cooperatives

Whenever I hear of these radical and useless projects I wonder just how these idiots expect to eat. There is a very nice ranch in this area that is now owned by a quasi government-conservation outfit to conserve the native prairie like it was. Of course they have a fancy tourist shop where...

    2007 Polaris Ranger XP

I don't think power steering is a big deal. Up until just a couple of years ago it wasn't available on any of these machines that I know of. I have a 2012 Gator 825i and it doesn't have power steering although now you can get it. Just keep your thumb out of the steering wheel because if you...

    what would you buy

If I had $5 million to spend I'd buy a section of land, build a fine home right in the middle of it, get me a big ol' easy chair and tell the rest of the world to go to hell.

    Yearling prices for spring

Looks to me like buying steers, or even heifers, for grass and then selling in the fall is a really good way to lose your shirt. I just sold some 650# steers for over $1,200 each and I'm glad I was selling.

    Custom Grazing Prices?

I haven never heard of grass rent prices that high. We are in a pretty good native grass area being in and near the Flint Hills grazing area. For that quarter section mentioned above we'd be looking at 25 pairs and a bull for a 6 month grazing period and probably a price between $25 and $30...

    Eighteen below zero

Minus 4 with a minus 12 windchill this morning. About 6 inches of snow and sleet on the ground. Supposed to warm up some later in the week.

    Life Along the 100th Meridian

That was a very interesting story and the pictures really made it fascinating. It almost seemed like it was written by someone who knew the country rather than a NY City writer. Very good post Soapweed. I enjoyed it.

    What to charge for hauling?

I'd think a minimum of $3 a loaded mile plus expenses for food and lodging. Doesn't really matter that the trailer isn't full. What kind of fuel mileage do you get pulling the trailer?

    debt load

I don't think it makes sense at all. If you sell the land and the cows you have just sold off two income producing properties. And building a new house will just increase your debt again and won't produce a dime in income or depreciation. Crop prices are decent, cattle prices are pretty high...

    farm to feet

You are right on the sibling situation. I have some neighbors going through the exact thing. Two boys have been doing the farming and want to continue but some city sisters can only see dollar signs and they don't have the means to buy out the sisters. It is too bad for sure. I think the...

    farm to feet

It seems sad to me to see that kind of ranch sell that has been in the family for many years. So often today kids don't share the spirit and the love of the land. Yes, it is hard work but the rewards are much greater than any city job that I know of. Plus from an investment standpoint having...
