Mining value out of mineral supplements-Dr. Jeff Hall

FH may I ask what Vigortone uses in their mineral to increase palatability? DDG isn't it? There absolutely has to be something in dry mineral to make it taste better or cattle simply would not eat it. I understand your aversion to chelates as Vigortone uses very few if any in their minerals but...

    Churches

Some will say the money could be used to feed the poor etc. which is the same thing Judas said about the oil used to anoint the Lord's feet. Most wouldn't blink at eye if it were for a new domed football stadium or an Olympic village. I'm amazed at the skill of the workmanship that goes into a...

Yessir they are chelates as are metal amino acid chelates and proteinates...Most research will usually be done with feedlot operations because it is easier to monitor and control them compared to pastured cow/calf operation. Ran a small scale test of my on with my dairy cattle a few years ago...

Let me give you a challenge. Find me a study or a presentation where those promoting hydroxy trace minerals or discussing research with hydroxy trace minerals ever compare them to amino acid complexes. You're going to find that comparisons are always made to sulfates, not organic minerals really...

They sell mineral with chelates but do not really promote it as seen my her reply. Not trying to cause a disagreement but simply pointing out that you can have the best of both worlds. Better mineral, better performance, miniscule difference in cost.

You may save a small amount of money (very small) but in the long run tests have already shown the amino acid complexes are the higher quality product. The hydroxy trace minerals seem to want to promote themselves as being better than sulfates which they are.

I'm going to jump in and disagree with you FH. I realize you sell mineral so you're always going to be partial to and promote your own but the two "sources" of mineral you mention are as old as dirt literally. Oxides are little more than minute rocks, 90% of which pass through the cow and end...

Hard to find ear corn around here as most is machine picked and stored. I remember as a kid hand picking corn (hated my dad for it) adn then hauling a pickup truck load to the feed mill to be ground, have protein and more roughage added to it along with molasses and hauling it home. Fed it to...

Forgot about the distance factor but for most folks corn is the cheapest and easiest obtained source of energy usually contained in a good heavy commercial feed. Very little DDG fed down this way for beef cattle and if used primarily a protein source in a TMR.

Most of my experience has been with dairies and we often fed much more than recommended (as much as 7-8 lbs. per head per day). Three to four pounds should be more than enough for good beef cattle along with the hay.

Cattle will give them a strange look at first but will adjust quickly. I've never fed them on the ground but there will be waste. Probably 10-15% at least. The darn things stick together so your thoughts about adding the corn will certainly work for improving the flow of the seed. And the corn...

Should always go into winter with cattle in good condition regardless of where you live....but when you need conditioning lower protein higher energy feed is usually higher quality and less expensive than high protein feed and does a much better job of improving body condition.

Roughage (hay, alfalfa) seldom has any really measurable fat although it will always have some. DDG on the other hand may contain as much as 12-14% crude fat depending on processing. A third trimester cow needs only a maintenance feed, crude protein not being as critical as energy level. Good...

Same here FH. Cottonseed meal has about 1% fat guaranteed. the new process is much more efficient at extracting the oil. Still a great product and the primary protein source used by most feed companies for cattle feed across the south/southwest. Just a personal opinion but you can't make a...

Have you considered just feeding straight cottonseed and feeding only half as much. Should still have adequate crude protein and great energy level not to mention milk production if you have cows nursing calves. Would be a great compliment to hay and your cattle should flourish.

Have heard of beans being fed up to 4 lbs. per head per day. That will give you one pound of pure vegetable fat in the diet.Tremendous energy.

    Why do you buy cake?

Lava that's the way most of us in the warmer parts of the country feed. Mention alfalfa down here and folks think "dairy" and that's just about the only folks that can afford them. Plus most of us have more than enough grass hay to take care of our needs. Nutritionally cubes will be equal to if...

    What is the difference

Corn gluten feed is a byproduct of the corn syrup and corn starch manufacturing process. Much different than DDG which is byproduct of ethanol manufacturing (use to be primarily from high quality whiskey distilling. lol). DDG is a much higher quality product ranging in crude protein from 25% to...

Actually for most beef operations it contains too much crude protein unless limit fed and should be fed as a mix with grass hay. No need wasting all that good protein by allowing it to end up on the ground without being utilized. The cow needs that roughage part of it as much if not more than...

    Mineral Options

Have had really good results with Purina’s Wind and Rain All Season Minerals 7 CP AV4. 100% of the zinc, manganese, copper and cobalt come from chelates, very palatable and reasonably priced. If I were to change I would probably switch to the VitaFerm Concept Aid but it's well over $30 a bag.
