    Calf Sled?

Thanks for the many nice responses. Sorry, I've been away from Ranchers.net since I put up the original post. My old home made sled has a cage which keeps the momma safely away from the calf. It has a rear gate that allows you to pull or push a calf in if he's standing up, or pull him in...

    Calf Sled?

For many years we've used a home built sled to move a newborn calf, with the anxious mother trotting along behind. It has worked well either attached to a saddle horn or behind a 4-wheeler. Unfortunately the years have taken it's toll on it. It has been upset, bent up and broken up so many...

    late branding

I like your method. I've never tried it myself, but I'm tempted to! To make it work, you've got to tie off. I'd like to see the horse face the calf though. I'd probably use a neck rope or tie a rein to the lariat to keep him faced up. If you hadn't taken time to photograph it all for us...

    Small calves?

Our fall calves are calving now. The calves are normal size and started on time.

To tag, or not to tag?

Or dare I mention, HEREFORD vs. ANGUS? Naww, I guess I won't.

To tag, or not to tag?

It looks like the consensus here is that people like tags. However, I don't think anyone answered the original question about whether tagging makes economical sense. In my opinion, tags are not essential but they can tend to make life around cows easier. I think it is a convenience which is...

    Calving Barn

There are so many good ideas. Everyone has their own preferences and each has merit. Our calving sheds have 10'x10' stalls and I think that is a good size. Not too big, yet big enough to give the cow room to move around without endangering the newborn calf. However, Soapweed gets along...

    The price of cows

What a great time to get out of the cattle business... if you're ready. This guy has reaped the rewards of a lifetime of work, building a good herd. Congratulations to him!!

    Calf ?

Why would you think that? Please note that I have never had an argument with you. EVER. I have a fair amount of experience and I simply agreed with the majority of your comment.

    Calf ?

My experience leads me to agree with Jingo2. Over my years of ranching, we've had these from time to time, with some worse than others. If you can get it to nurse on it's own, forget about it. It will take longer than a week or so, but by weaning, you won't even remember which one...

Hey river rat, how did the the heifer show and sale go for you on Sunday?

Heifers will be at the Rapid City Stock Show

I hope to get up there for a couple days. I'm not sure when that will be, but I'll keep that date in mind. Good luck with the sale. I'm sure the heifers will be well received.

Diversified ranch for sale---no offers yet.

What should this land sell for? $132 million is a lot of money, but depending how you price the irrigated ground, I came up with between $1176 and $1244 per deeded acre. I did not figure any value for the BLM. Recently a sandhill ranch along the Niobara River, with a number of pivot...

    Preg Checking

Not bad, not bad at all. However, I've learned from personal experience to not get too excited until it's finished. Too many times we've had great results on part of our cattle, or the first 2/3's of a bunch, only to be very disappointed when it was over! Good luck on the last of them.

    Pullin Bulls

Have you had Winks long enough to know what his winter coat looks like? I bought a good lookin' young blue roan mare from David quite a few years ago. In the winter, she had a beautiful white body coat, that looked like frost. Along with her black points, she was really quite striking. I...

    Later Spring 2011

Things are looking good for you. That last picture is calendar quality for sure. Simply beautiful! I like the way the horse, rider and dog are so peacefully marching up over the grassy rise, with snow capped mountains in the distance. Is it you? And is that the sorrel laying down in the...
