    Sheep

I've got Cheviots- and started mine from a flock up the road. He does nothing- and I mean nothing for those sheep and they consistently deliver twins, and no help is needed. Cheviots were bred and developed to be plunked in the border hills and left, and brought in when the lambs were to go to...

    question for the SHEEP people

They will waste... They will not eat stems, so depending on the stage of alfalfa, you could have a lot of waste. The best way I have learned to reduce waste is feed accordingly- they leave a lot, feed less. Even when fed in hay feeders, when they pull it out it may or may not get eaten. Sheep...

I just ain't much on milking beef cows

I think if you are in for a penny, you are in for pound. When you milked that cow, that was the penny/pound. Right now that calf needs you and she is money. I hope she turns the (good) corner.

    SKINNY Angus

Just an update: Since I last posted, the owner of the cattle has been feeding sileage once a day. One healthy calf was born to the hereford/angus cross cow. They lost one heifer to getting stuck in the hay feeder, which I am told is not that unusual. This morning, the ewe necked cow was...

    The skinny angus story

Per: I have seen these cattle up close and personal- enough to touch them. That pic I posted doesn't show anything overtly horrible in her condition, even though, trust me, that many look worse than that. Whether it be from ignorance or neglect, result is same, hungry, skinny cattle. The...

Can there be a third choice? I would select "talk with owner"

    SKINNY Angus

Listen everyone :) I am not calling the spca. These animals are being fed, albeit, clearly low quality feed, as evidenced by their low weight. I did ask in my first post if this could be parasites, or what exactly could be used to get them to gain fast, but safely. I am not meddlesome, or...

    SKINNY Angus

Thanks HM. Hard to tell well in thick winter coats. Thanks for the support. I have no dog in this fight, as it were, I just hate to see animals not doing well, when there should be a simple answer. I will check in tomorrow and see if indeed, the owner showed up with sileage. They were...

    SKINNY Angus

I think things will change, either the land owner will give them his better quality round bales, or the cattle owner will step up. He's been given a lot of pressure by people he knows. The pics are not great, and no, they are not walking dead, but compared to how they looked last winter, it's...

    SKINNY Angus

Hay maker That's my sentiment. The pictures that I love to see here, show well fed cattle in sub zero temps, with wind breaks, no fancy barns. Yet, these animals all look very good. It's a point of pride to a rancher/farmer, that his/her animals are healthy and look good. I took some not...

    SKINNY Angus

I am in agreement with the sentiment that one cannot know the full picture by a post on the internet. I can assure you that I can tell the difference between just a bit under condition and thin, versus WAY too skinny. Now, these animals are able to get around, I would put them at a 2 on the...

    SKINNY Angus

A friend of mine is leasing some pasture space to a guy who has a small herd of Angus. It's a mixed herd of cows/steers and some calves (not sure of sex). This is the second winter with them. First winter they did well, and looked good. This year, he added more animals. Well, from a...

    keeping steers cool

I'm all for leaving them be :) It's just that the area of the barn they go into does not have a large enough opening for a skid steer, and it's making one he** of a mess. As I kicked one out of the barn the other day- after it made a mess of another area of the barn I cleaned out already, I...

    keeping steers cool

We are having a heat wave in our area. The steers (black angus) are going in the barns and trying to stay cool but are making quite a mess. I would like to block them off. There is sufficient shade. The reason they go in the barn, is because it is partially underground, and has a stone...

Bull drags Police Officers down street

Jeez, imagine that, several men couldn't hold onto a 1400 lb bull... Would have loved to see them try ;) 1,400-pound bull drags officers down street PATERSON, New Jersey (AP) — Police say a 1,400-pound bull that escaped from a northern New Jersey slaughterhouse dragged officers with a lasso...

    catching steers?

I am happy to report that the catching of the steers went off without a hitch yesterday, and when they were released into my brother's field, there was a lead steer (if they exist) who was calm, and within 15 mins they were happily eating grass. I haven't gotten any phone calls to help catch...

    catching steers?

Thanks- I got a call this morning that we are trying again. Owner has them trained to follow a bucket loader with grain into the smaller paddock, and he has a chute. I will be there if needed, but as others mentioned- keep my distance so as to reduce the stress.
