I'm not sure where to post this, but the political bull site just seemed to be the wrong place for it. Too many folks on there that never miss an opportunity to slam the war and our military so I'm posting it here.

When 2nd Lt. James Cathey's body arrived at the Reno Airport, Marines climbed into the cargo hold of the plane and draped the flag over his casket as passengers watched the family gather on the tarmac. During the arrival of another Marine's casket last year at Denver International Airport, Major Steve Beck described the scene as one of the most powerful in the process: "See the people in the windows? They'll sit right there in the plane, watching those Marines. You gotta wonder what's going through their minds, knowing that they're on the plane that brought him home," he said. "They're going to remember being on that plane for the rest of their lives. They're going to remember bringing that Marine home. And they should."

Second Place
Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News
The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. "I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it," she said. "I think that's what he would have wanted."

Gut wrenching pictures. Thanks. Been There, tell your grandsons thankyou from me for the sacrifices they are making.

Dang had to sign in 3 times ...too many tears. Tristen will be leaving for boot camp in 4.5 weeks. Yes, I know he will be going "over there" and he just might come back that way.
He is proud to serve and is looking forward to going. He knows it will be hard and the cost might be his life. He says he never wants to watch the TV for hours and know some other family lost a loved one in a senseless act of terror.
I know I have to be strong and not show how scared I am. He has enough to worry about other than Mom. I thought I could handle it with no pain or tears. Seeing thoses pictures brought it all back and opened the flood gates. Yes I am still proud and will support him all the way,but as it draws near the tears and fears become harder. I will never second guess his decission nor would I ever dream of talking him out of going. I know if he does come home drapped ina flag I will know that was his choice he he was proud to serve his country. I will never disgrace his honor by talking against the soliders nor the war effort they are serving.
I am thankful for the close friends whom I can cry and vent I will be needing them more in the next couple of weeks.
My only wish is that ..............no I will not voice that. He will be home and then will meet the people who stood behind me and held me while I was supporting him.

Thanks for the pictures LB. This is where they belong. Those are priceless, you gotta love those MARINES. Our Marine was supposed to leave Camp Pendelton for the Marine Base in Oahu Hawaii today as he has completed School of Infantry, he was not sure if he was going to sniper school, he requested that, or what as they are giving orders on a last minute deal. He heard that they would go to Afganistan in September but that is pure speculation. At least for the next few months he will have a mailing address and access to a phone once in awhile.
And yes I do think of him coming home with a flag but I know damn well that somebody has to do it and I know he will do it to the best of his abilities and he has the abilities. Those are the ones I want defending me and my family. I still think it should be mandatory to walk through Arlington before you are given the right to vote.

Amen.

Thank you Liberty Belle,it's people like you that keeps this Nation strong and free, for everyone.................good luck

Poignant images, from about 30 minutes away from here. However, I am of the opinion that a few of the photos that were very personal and moments of grief should not have been photographed to share with the rest of the world...just doesn't seem very respectful.

I have to agree Cal, I know how I'd feel if a photographer was busy snapping pictures at my son's funeral. One of our neighbor girls and her husband live in Kyle and she was disgusted with the photographers.

As far as the ceremony itself goes, this is the Indian way to honor their dead and none are more honored than a warrier killed in battle.

My father, a combat hardened WWII veteran, said the best soldiers he knew were Indian and the very bravest he served with was a man named Elmer Red Bull, a warrier from the same area as this young soldier.

Rocky Mountain News reporter Jim Sheeler and photographer Todd Heisler spent the past year with the Marines stationed at Aurora's Buckley Air Force Base who have found themselves called upon to notify families of the deaths of their sons in Iraq. In each case in this story, the families agreed to let Sheeler and Heisler chronicle their loss and grief. They wanted people to know their sons, the men and women who brought them home, and the bond of traditions more than 200 years old that unite them.

I think people need to see this sort of thing to remind them that freedom isn't always free, even the most emotional photos. Both sides of the war need to realize and appricate the sacrifices these soldiers and their familys make. Two of my best friends donated the use of the team and wagon and their time. They were offered pay but absolutly wouldn't take anything they said it was a great honor to be able to help out. They told me all about the experence but the pictures were much more powerful than just words.
