We are having quite a winter here. It arrived in a hurray on nov 16 and we are up to 40 inches of snow now. Today is a cold one but all waterers are working and the heated shop is really nice as the pto shaft on processor would not even budge at all. It is now thawing out.

Glad I have a lot of angles windbreaks as we had 30mph wind yesterday at -28*

Some sun and a good treeline equals a sunny but cold stress reliever for these mature cows, they start calving in two weeks

Camrose area. I have 300 bales to get home that I can only see the top 2' of, its going to be a long winter here but at least I know we have some grass and hay next year for sure

It's amazing how much cold they will take if their bellies are full and they have shelter from the wind.

One morning during last week's cold snap here, the cows were contentedly standing in the morning sun, chewing their cud,
wearing a very unusual coat. Their sun-ward side was
bare, dry and black while their other side still had an inch of snow covering. Never saw that before.

In anticipation of the nasty weather forecast for the next few days, yesterday I extended the windbreak I built earlier out of
soybean straw bales. Basically straight in the middle with both ends curling around a bit in an "S" configuration.
That way they can find shelter no matter where the wind is coming from. They don't bother eating the bales as long as they have
enough hay in front of them.

This winter has had its challenges. We have already burned almost
half of the wood in the wood cellar. Lots more piled outside, just gotta get it in.

I guess I didn't mention that daughter was in Sylvan Lake. Not that far from you. Some friends of ours from this country moved to the Westaskwin sp area a few years back. I think they have Herefords.

That's a pretty nice set of girls ya have there. The wind break they are standing along looks like it would make a nice calf shelter, would catch a lot of sunlight but still have nice air flow. I like the idea.

those angled sheltels never blow over and make very nice calf shelters once calves are a week old. They are only 4' wide at the bottom so the calves can always see moma and not have so many in one spot, helps reduce disease as I move them twice in the spring

Well how is the weather there now in Jan 2014?I saw on the News -40 zero chill some places. That's sure enough cold as a polar bear's butt.Even odd weather here in Bahrain/Persian Gulf.Cold ,windy, wet almost like Port Hadlock Wa.Never saw it like this before.
