Well our old 4020 turn up dead today. Over 40 years on the same motor and has never been over haul. I wish the hour meter still worked it would be wild to see just how many hours that motor had on it. I found a guy that going to help me over haul it for $1500 plus parts. I have also found another guy in La that has over haul kits for around $1500 to. So it looks like I will have this old boy back to going soon I pray.

We just rebuilt a motor in a 4240 this spring after 28 years. It should be good for another 30 or more with the amount we run a tractor anymore.

A couple of years ago we sold a 4430 that had the original motor with over 35,000 hours on it. The guy came, looked, wrote a cheque, hopped in and drove it home. The only thing we had ever done, was put in a new powershift about 20 years ago.

I don't know why John Deere don't start building that tractor again. It has to be one of the best models of all time.

What tractor do you think was the best ever built ? The Farmall M surely is in there too. And the Ford 8N must be one of the most durable machines ever built.

Grew up with Masseys and I think the old Fergusson 35X was one of the best ever built. They were the mainstay of British agriculture for decades. Like RSLs JD we had a 35X with unbelievable hours on it. The clock quit about 24,000 hours and that was before I ever drove it! My Dad bought it in '66 along with a farm although it was a '54 model I think. We sold it at our farm sale in 2000 and it brought twice what my Dad had paid for it.
Looks like a toy of a tractor now but they could do a lot of work - pulling loads up hill they had more guts than some of the heavier/newer tractors - I think it had something to do with the power to weight ratio and also the compression ratio but I'm not a mechanic at all so don't really have a clue. Lots of farms still have one over there - they keep them around to start the newer tractors in cold weather and for working scrapers in cubicle sheds.

A couple of cost under "plus parts"...
Rebuilt injectors and pump.
Rebuilt head
New oil pump
rocker arm replacements
new water pump
overhaul kit seems a little high unless it includes a crankshaft

If the trans is good, you end up with a tractor that will probably out live you.

How did it "die"?

It started making noise last weekend when my wife was shaking the pecans trees. (I have been kidding her that she broke it). By Monday it started getting worst. Wednesday I was checking the oil and it was lower I knew something was up. That tractor has never burned one drop of oil. So I deside to change the oil for it fall changing and little bit of medal was coming out with the oil. I hope after we get done it will last another 40 years. We let JD fix the powershift trans. a few years ago. So

I know how you feel-- check with JD on one of their rebuilt engines-- warranty is good and just drop the old one and bolt in the other. And if it goes south another is right there :D
