Welcome to southern Saskatchewan.

Now you need a couple months of -40F weather to help you feed up that surplus.

I hope I get enough to make it through the summer. If it gets down to -40 I am going to move.

There have been many times when I would take the dry -40 over the 35 degree rain. Wet cold saps all the energy...........................

How many times have you actually experienced -40?

Personally? Many times. I lived in Barrow, AK for a couple of years back in the 70's.

The wind chill got -100 there a few times........................

"If we have a choice, snow is preferred to a cold rain. We lose what is called "air insulation" in cattle that get wet versus those that are out in the snow. The air pockets between hair fibers are a source of insulation. We lose this insulation when hair gets matted down in a cold rain. The result is that the Dry Winter Coat goes from having a critical temperature of 32 degrees F to about 59-60 degrees F."

I totally agree with you...We had storms in april. The first one was light rain for about 2 days straight and temp was 33-35 the whole time...couple days later the wind picked up and in started snowing....those new calves were much better off during that snow...I would much rather have it snow rather then have 35 degree rain
Id also much rather be walking through lots in feburary versus april when the lots are muddy....calves can take the cold a lot better

Another dilemma here is hair coat. The necessity for short hair in summer keeps us from breeding to the thicker coated animals.

For instance, it was 90 degrees today with nearly 100% humidity. Black cows are hunting the shade or a pond now. Only graze at night.
