Thanks for the pictures Soapweed. Looks like the calves are off to a good start. You've probably answered this before, but what do the different color tags signify? ownership or sires possibly? just curious how your system works

Oh Lilly you crack me up..lol a leash...lol to funny!

Well you can chalk up another week of successful ranching Soapweed...all is looking good in your neck of the hills...Thanks for your photo's.

What a poppin good set of babies!! Can't wait to get the likes of those in my feedlot! And be thankful that you have no mud.....we are hip high in mud right now and it doesn't seem to want to settle. However, we are at 77 degrees with a stout south wind but a little too humid to dry things fast. I wish I were in your country....grass is always greener, right? By the way, where do you market your calves? We have bought out of Valentine, Atkinson, and Burwell.

We use several different colors of tags on the calves, mostly to give us some indication of what cow they go to. We are calving out quite a few first-calf heifers this spring. Last summer these heifers ran in two different bunches, so we are giving purple tags to the calves from supposedly our "best" half of the heifers, and white tags to the "lesser" half of heifers. All of our three-year-old-cows are Angus, and their calves get green tags. The calves from all of the four-year-old Angus cows and older get yellow tags. All of the calves from three-year-old on up black baldy cows get blue tags. We have about 175 head of red and red baldy cows, and all of their calves get pink tags. My sister runs a few cows here, and her calves get orange tags. Saddletramp's calves get red tags. I know, it sounds like a disorganized mess, but it is a pretty simple system once it is understood.

Wish we could take some of the extra moisture off your hands. We got about fifteen hundredths of an inch of rain yesterday, which will surely help but we would have welcomed more. It should hold the dust down for a couple of days.

Come to the Valentine Livestock Auction about any week during the month of Octoboer, and you will have a chance to bid on our calves. Thanks for the interest.
