Hey Soapweed, are you putting up a new windmill tower in that first picture or is that a new well?

It is a neighbor's windmill, where I am pasturing cattle. The windmill posts needed to be replaced. We were hoping to pull the well pipe and put a submersible pump beneath the cylinder of the windmill. This way, if the wind wasn't blowing with sufficient speed, the submersible pump could be plugged into a portable generator. Unfortunately the well is too old to accommodate an electric pump. We did install an additional tank which will give more watering capacity. I have a portable pumpjack that can be used if the wind doesn't blow.

We have several of our windmills that have submersible pumps either down beside the windmill cylinder if the well is big enough or screwed in the bottom of the cylinder if the well is too small. We started out using 6000 watt gas generators and have over time moved to bigger trailer mounted diesel generators. Course I should tell you that all the wells we have pumps on push to storage tanks and pipelines with drinkers. Its nice not to have to go out a couple times a day to refuel generators.

In Wyoming, we had a windmill with a pumpjack. Something was wrong down in that well and we'd move the cows out to the pasture--the well would go down and the cows would come all the way home. We'd fix the pumpjack, take the cows back out and then do the same thing all over again.

We had hunters from out of state and they took pictures of that windmill and called it "Jack's Wonder Well"...wonder if it would work or not. :???: :P

We were able to fix it finally. As I remember something was wrong with the leathers...

It probably would't hold it's prime because the leathers were old and dried out. For some strange reason to me - - that sounds vaguely familiar! They probably need to be replaced!!

DOC HARRIS

Ya, Doc, they did need replacing.

Trouble was, someone else owned the ranch and the windmill and the pumpjack. We leased the place and it took a lot time and a lot of talking on our part to convince them work needed to be done.

For some reason when folks don't have to do the actual work, and be inconvenienced...it just doesn't matter much to them.

Gosh, I like that Sundance horse of the Kosmo Kids. :!:
