Pulled this calf this morning. It's a little hard to see from the photo, as the sun had already started to dry him, but he was covered in this yellow fluid, looked pretty much like egg yolk. Calf was alive and healthy. Although it took him a little while to get up & nurse but seems fine.

Was wondering if this could be some type of mineral deficiency?

Use to get that alot on calfs that I pulled.more so on the tuffer pulls or one that were left too long. Not sure what it is.. never really thought about it much..Maybe it has something to do with being inside too long..?? dont know..never seem to bother them tho. they always did ok..

I've seen it a few times without any ill effects on the calf. They seem to have the get-up-and-go just like the rest. Someone once told me what it was, but I just can't remember right now. Remind me later to jog my memory and try and remember what I forgot.

It's from having the meconium bowel movement in utero.

Yeah, and they say that is from them waiting to long to be born...but we see it alot in vigorous calves born normally.

Vet says it happens when there was some sort of calving stress. Not usually any kind of problem though.

If I was born outside this time of the damn year, I'm pretty sure I'd have a meconium bowel movement too.

  That's for sure most days this time of year, but today it was a beautiful 52F here. It's probably the warm before the storm.

Meconium, sure sounds like that could be it. I saw her starting & was bothered by how dark the bag looked. That's when I got her in to take a closer look. Calf was a bit on the large size but was a real easy pull, normal presentation. If I hadn't of been paranoid about that weird color, she would of had it on her own in no time at all.

Yup...my youngest daughter was covered in that yellow colour when she was born!!
My better judgement tells me not to make a joke about how you went about getting her cleaned up. :)
