A rancher's nightmare and how they survived it

Man that's a tough blow to a family.
That happened in Eastern Alberta and Western Saskatchewan last fall.
Strange how when Tam immigrated to Canada 38 years ago she needed clean Xrays to check for TB. Now we get refugees flown in from all over the world and I don't see how they have them all checked for TB.
 
One would think that there would be a way to determine the origin. If the story gains more traction I predict someone will blame Global Warming.
 
When I was in the Stockgrowers we had a presentation on how Foot and Mouth would spread up the continent from a roping in Texas with rope horses carrying it bug along all the way north.

Those corrientes cross the border like fruit pickers and devil lettuce - unobstructed. I wonder about TB every time I hear about the quarantine being ignored.

"Nightmare", "Tragedy", whatever name you want to tag it with, a hard working family running a solid ranching business have been seriously damaged.

Adding to the damage to them is that it was through absolutely NO FAULT of their own! That seems like adding insult to injury.

It seems to me it would help if a source could be found, and I sure hope more is done to assure that no infected cattle are coming into this country from ANYWHERE. Our borders need to be more secured to stop more than illegal and ill-intentioned people from coming into this country! I have no problem with legitimate trade, but do want cattle moving BOTH directions to be tested for potential problems somewhere in that process. I'm not sure if there still are the numbers of imported 'Mexican steers' that used to be so prevalent in states not far west of SD, but sure hope if they are, it is with adequate testing first.

The costs of this 'incident', financial on top of the emotional scars, (and it is highly likely that the financial reimbursements fall far short of actual costs) to that family surely the 'big' part of the total costs. They have had their own personal 'Atlas' all over again. It's also reminds of the fires, from the huge ones in states to our south, and the Cottonwood and Wolf fires east of Wall, SD in past months. All are 'sort of' acts of nature. Tho I do wonder about the SD fires as both began at pin point spots right along I-90, appearing an easy distance for a cigarette to be tossed, and no real indication of any legitimate source, but maybe could have been something hot falling off a vehicle, couldn't it????? That TB bug surely seems more equivalent to a tossed cigarette in that negligence in having animals tested someplace seems a logical cause, both illegal acts.......unless it was just some sort of wild 'fluke' of nature. Which seems the kinder conclusion.

However, we (govt and individuals) do need to be extremely diligent in doing the best to find the facts in order to prevent another bad situation. And it seems everyone locally concerned in this incident sure have done their best and gone the distance to do what is right. All who played a part can feel good about their efforts, imo.

Less visible are the costs, largely not reimbursed, to others who were affected, but they are not insignificant and are not easy to figure
