Worming!

I guess I had never considered that there were more than one type of round worm - - - I was talking to my vet this morning and he told me about Raccoon Roundworms. I just wanted to make you aware that they exist. Do not " forget " to worm your puppy! I do not think we have ever had a case of Raccoon Roundworm as we are very "proactive" in maintaining the health of our beloved family pets. I routinely use "Zimecterin" for heart worm control but you cannot rely on it for roundworms - - - it will control the heart worms and will have a slight effect on roundworms but there are many other cheap wormers on the market that are much more effective for roundworms. Below are some that are recommended.

If your dog tests positive for roundworms there are several medications that can be administered.

For the intestinal form:
• Pyrantel Pamoate
• Febantel
• Praziquantel
• Ivermectin
• Mibemycin Oxime
For the larval form:
• Corticosteriods
• Long-term albendazole

I sent the draft version of this email to my vet for review and he stated "Piperazine is an old wormer still useful for ascrids. It is very cheap. Fenbendazole (panacur) is a broad-spectrum wormer also very effective against ascrids."

Raccoons are everywhere and if you view the attached articles you will see how important a thing like regular worming is. Not just for your pets but raccoon roundworms can present a threat to your human family as well!

Do not neglect the financial and emotional investment you have in your loved pets. Chose a good Veterinarian in your area and develop a relationship much like your family doctor and follow his/her advise and you will have a devoted companion for a long time to come.

Remember this can kill dogs, cats, and humans!!!
