Hey Miocene, are you going to let us know if there are a few strange looking calves out your way next spring? :?

Not much chance, they say, but . . .

burnt- i saw a picture last week in the paper, then heard more about it on the radio today but don,t know too much more than that GCREEK.-IF ELK were half Simmental than i guess you should be buying my bulls ( like your B.I.L.& Nephew).did to get through your swamps. lol  :D

Back when i was in high school one of the locals came to our ffa class with a calf. Tht calf was about six months along the calf was deformed as far as no ears really short legs and an abnormal body. We couldnt figure out what was going on so we sent it to the state vet and though dna they determined it was a cow/elk calf. If i remember right he lost around ten calves. Next time shoot the elk before he messes up to much. At lest you can have some elk steak for your troubles :)

well we all have our preferences on here don,t we. I think black angus cow must be part blck bear based on their temperment compareable to a sow with cubs

cure- from what you describe i have seen something very similar out of the area where this elk was.at the time the guy who hadit passed it off as a genetic freak.this was in a prominent local herford herd and the owner sure wanted to keep it quiet.

Ya I can see that you'd have to DNA it to differentiate it from some of those low-built Aberdeen Angus back then . . .

I bet it came back as straight bovine genes. Sounds line he had a problem with recessive genetic challenge in his cattle.

gcreek -I didn't think i was being defensive but rather setting the record straight on the temperment of some black angus cattle.  i have seen some black cows take out their owners more than once.these guys were no wimps & from what i read on here from some of the guys in the states who need to use cages to tag calves my comparison to a sow bear with cubs is appropriate :D   by the way gcreek you can keep the white stuff out west we realy don't need it yet.  thank you for the compliment on my cattle type now i just have to convince you to use the breed in either red or black hides ! :P :P have a great day
