Conoco-Phillips Petroleum and Tyson Foods plan to team up later this year to produce an animal fat biodiesel that they have named "renewable diesel." Conoco said the animal fat diesel will be produced in an existing Texas refinery and will come out as a part of the regular diesel fuel mix. Animal fat biodiesel requires no engine modifications for use. The new fuel is awaiting a tax-law ruling to see if it qualifies for the $1.00 per gallon tax subsidy available for renewable fuels as it is slightly more expensive to produce than regular diesel. One 42 gallon barrel of animal fat biodiesel requires roughly an equal amount of animal fat to produce. Tyson said it can provide the refinery with 300 million gallons of beef, pork and chicken fat from nearby abattoirs. A gallon of biodiesel typically requires the fat of two finished steers, or 16 hogs or 1300 chickens. Production over the next 18 months is expected to be around 175 million gallons or over four times that of the typical vegetable oil biodiesel plant. Tyson said that animal fat diesel will benefit a broader group of farmers and processors than corn-based ethanol or soybean-based biodiesel and will fit in much better with existing diesel refining, storage, transport and retailing operations than grain-based biodiesel.

There was a huge fat stray tom cat came in here. I would have let him be but he beat the heck out of my nice lil' orange pet tom cat. I have a zero tolerance policy for that kind of BS so yours truly took care of the problem. I'm SO sorry I did not consult PETA or the Humane Soc first. This cat did not even pass Go and collect $200.

This stray tom was about the same size as a good size coon. I bet if rendered out you could'a got some high quality fuel out of him. Is that what they mean when they say to put a tiger in your tank?

Great idea. CAB truckstops coming soon...

Texan, I bet you're on to something. Probably get a lot better "fuel mileage" out of Angus and other British breeds, than the continentals. Probably not much mpg on a limo running Limo fat! :D

You are pretty witty today. :D How much rain did you get today? We got about 2 tenths. Wind is sucking it right out pretty breezy here. Maybe they should create an electric car with a windmill on top to produce its own energy.  .

have a cold one

Yep LA, by dark I could almost kick up dust in places. Cows upset a feed bunk today. I notice when I flipped it back over it was dry underneath. Kinda sad that this .30" didn't go far enough to run the width of a feed bunk.

BTW, I am taking your advice and having a cold one with my steak and french fries for supper!

PS If I remember '70's ads right, it was Exxon that put the tiger in the tank.

I have a question. What are we doing with all the animal fat now? If we take all the animal fat to make fuel what will happen to the industry that is using the animal fat now?

GENERAL INFORMATION
Edible Beef Tallow
Animal Oil Wholesaler you can trust!

Beef tallow is obtained by rendering beef fat, the resultant product then being bleached, neutralised and deodorised (refined beef tallow). On the other hand, the product of fat that is simply rendered is known as "edible beef tallow". Beef tallow is obtained by means of a dry or wet rendering process. The wet rendering process is more gentle and delivers better yields. With the wet rendering process, offal from slaughterhouses undergoes coarse mechanical pulverising and is then steam-heated to a temperature of at least 90°C, breaking down and sterilising enzymes. Fat is then removed from the tissue. The water-fat mixture is then cooled and the fat (edible beef tallow) is separated. Further chemical-physical stages (bleaching, neutralisation, deodorisation) ultimately deliver a product known as 'refined beef tallow'.

Nowadays, the dry rendering process is uneconomical in terms of the energy that is required and it is rarely used.
Beef tallow is a whitish (beef tallow) or whitish to yellow (edible beef tallow) substance. It is solid at 20°C and gives off a mild odour. It is not water-soluble, but it is soluble in organic solvents. The main components in both fats are: oleic, palmitic, stearic, palmitoleic, linoleic and myristic acid. Other fatty acids account for <1% of the product.

The USA is by far the biggest producer and exporter of beef tallow, with production accounting for approx. 25 to 30% of global oil and fat production. In the past, beef tallow was used in early cultures for lighting (woodchips soaked in beef tallow) soaps and ointments. Today, beef tallow is a major raw material used in the production of chemical intermediate products, such as fatty acids and fat alcohols. In addition to its principal uses in edible fats and oils, beef tallow is also used as baking and cooking fat, as well as in margarine production, which involves small amounts. With its similar fatty acid spectrum, beef tallow was formerly used to stretch cocoa butter.
