Apple Cider Vinegar/ Supplement Question

I've been reading Ranchers for awhile now, this is my first question on Ranchers.net. I need some advice from the Pro's. :)

Who has experience and knowledge with feeding Apple Cider Vinegar? What are the benefits you've witnessed/experienced? And what would make you refer it to others for?

I ask, because I have a 2 year old gelding that I had wintered out in NE and brought him to CO in May. He's thin in the neck and down his top line and I'm trying to put weight on him. In addition to hay he's getting 1 to 2 flakes of alfalfa and a pound of Strategy in the middle of the day. He looked wormy when I got him home (pot belly, long frizzy coat and itchy) I wormed him 2 times in 30 days and he's finally starting to shed out…. Someone suggested I start feeding him Apple Cider Vinegar "to fix him" and "make him healthy". She feeds it to her horse and swears by it, but I don't see all the benefits she and the internet talk about shinning through oh her horse.

So does anyone have any advise/suggestions on feeding the Vinegar or any recommendations on a vitamin or mineral supplement to help fill him out? :?

Vinegar is a nice supplement, it won't do anything nutrition wise.
I have a friend who is an eqine healer. She advocates the use
apple cider vinegar and cinnamon mixed daily in grain. Apple cider
vinegar helps with arthritis. I know of a horse that had a bone spur
in its hoof, the vet said it was done for. She consulted this healer
that I just mentioned and was advised to soak the horses foot
in apple cider vinegar. They did. That was many years ago but they
team roped on that horse for a long time after that. I have a friend
who drinks apple cider vinegar and swears it helps the arthritis
in her back. But fed to horses, it is a supplement. Not a substitute.

I would suggest you do a Power Pack on your horse if you have not
been worming him with Safeguard. The Ivomec products just do not
get all the worms. You can buy the Power Pack most stores where
they sell horse wormer. Or if you want to save money, go get the
cattle equivelant, which is Safeguard. For equines it is called Panacur,
but both have the same exact ingredients. For older horses a Power
Pack calls for double dose for 5 days. For a 2-year old, I'd suggest
regular dose for 5 days. You can get it in pellet form or in a tube.
If you get the pellets, it would take 1 lb. a day for 5 days for 1000# horse.
800# horse would get .8 lb. for 5 days. Young animals are more suspetible to worms than older animals.

I'll send you a PM about Strategy. There are much better products
out there.

Hope this helps.

I would have him checked by a vet for worms... And when and if he is clean then I would grdually start feeding him in the morning and night if you can... I feed strategy and like it... If you can get your hands on some progressive nutrition that would be an option... I also feed oats... Horses won't founder on oats, but make sure he can and does poop.. Sometimes it can cause a blockage especially if you don't know what your digestive system is on your horse... I've done them all.... All kinds of feed from beet pulp to you name it... You just have to find what works for your horse. And start slow... It takes time.... Let us know how ya turn out..
Oh ya cider vinegar is great to keep the flies off your horse.. I've put it in the water trough..... Good Luck and keep us posted... It'a all a learning thingy....

Apple Cider Vinegar is good for your horse. But...it won't put any weight on it. It will however help him better digest the feed you are feeding. It's good for their joints. Even tho a 2 year old shouldn't really have any joint issues yet. It's good for keeping their kidneys flushed out. Also it helps keep flies and mosquitos off them to a degree. Everyone here on the place gets 1/4 cup at each feeding mixed in with their feed.

The safeguard power pack worming is a good idea. It just does them good if they've never had it done.

Apple Cider Vinegar is more of an "inside" the horse supplement than it is somethin you'd "see" a noticeable difference....if that made sense.

But you hafta be feeding the right feed to see results your lookin for.

I'm not a fan of strategy...but that's my own personal opinion. I have used it.....didn't like it. Especially for the price. There's lots better feed out there that's not as expensive. Most importantly...no matter what you feed, read the feed tag, and feeding instructions. Weight of your horse, verses how many lbs of feed you should feed a day. And it's always better if they are fed twice a day verses once a day. Break up the amount into two feedings. And make sure they have hay available all the time. I wouldn't say alfalfa hay.....but at least good grass hay.

Also somethin that's good for growin ones....or ones that need weight...is top dressing their feed ration with Calf Manna.

It's best to rely on ingredients, we can easily be fooled by analysis
based on %'s. For instance, Dirt contains protein, but is not digested.
So be sure to take a look at the ingredients, as JL mentioned.
I've seen Chicken Digest in Dog Food...adds protein %...

I don't like Strategy...seen lots of problems with it...but it's highly
advertised.
