Last two paragraphs:

"Individually, we must use a sharp pencil and determine our sweet spot. Try not to get caught up in the hype that a specific size of cow is the only size that is profitable. Your environment and beef-product needs will set the parameters while your producer-specific goals, advantages or needs will narrow that to your ideal cow size."

"Finally, I encourage you to check the weight of your cows and find out exactly where you are--you may be surprised! I travel thousands of miles and study many cow herds and, and I can tell you that most cattlemen think they have a nice set of 1,200# cows. I have seen a lot of 1,350-1,450# cows that somehow always seem to weigh 1200#."

Same guy that sells grown on grass bulls. He fails to mention the huge self feeders the bulls run too.

Kind of odd, the people that get articles printed sometimes.
Heather Smith Thomas is one. I cringe when I read her articles. Lately they
have been some better, but in the past...  !

There just aren't enough Ag people that want to write,so publications tend to get a little desperate, seems to me.

When I ran across the article, I thought it was fitting to post here since their was a lot of interest in the discussion thread BRG started on cow size.

Thanks for the info, 4 Diamond. I had never seen any articles in print by him.

A few months ago, as I was going to one of our places just up the road I had a real " photo temptation". The local co-op's big feed truck was pulling out of the drive. right against the "Grown on Grass" sign. He had to stop and wait on me, it would have made quite the picture............But, I was a good boy and kept on going.

LOL You maybe a better man than I. I don't always buy into all the straight grass no grain hocus pocus.

Small world. How about a few C of O stories ?

Did you talk to him today, or how did you put this together ?

Now I need to do some detective work.

I could tell several C of O stories on both of us! I worked with him on the farm my whole time down there. I talked to a mutual friend that sells bulls in Lebanon today and he asked if I was on here. I told him I was and my name then he mentioned you were on here and your name.

By the way, that was a nice article I read in Progressive Farmer..

Thanks. Our bull selling friend in Lebanon used to post here , but haven't seen him for a while.[/quote]

Your son-in-law was on our county swcd board so I use to see their family some. For such a big world it sure is small sometimes.

It sounds like I live a couple of hours away from Stocker
and Diamond

I think cow size here regulates on the management and nutrition the cows
Had their entire life
Many replacement cows are brought in and out of this Area
The smaller cows are sold by the head and not weighed
The bigger cows are Weighed up and sold by the pound
I have seen cow buyers bring in cows from the west and east here
And locally owned cows
The traditional cow calf man as most know it is out numbered
By cow traders.
I can go to counties where they once had
Extn Beef Cattle specialist. Those areas have super traditional
Cow calf operations where the next county over is mostly traders

We're in a very traditional cow- calf area . we're the only ones right around here that background yearlings on grass. We have some cow-calf also.
